IFL 2014 Week One Rankings
by Jack Smith
November 4, 2014

What the heck happened??? Top Flight lost? Discombobulators, Royal Pain, and the Rock Hards win? Everything's gone haywire! I'm somehow going to have to sort out my precious rankings so all this makes sense! I must admit it is rather exciting though. Anything can happen in the world of IFL! So take a gander as I try to collate all this information for you, the fan! On with the rankings!

(The number that precedes the team name is their previous ranking)

1) (3) ASIAN INVASION (1-0) By virtue of being the only one of my contenders still standing after Week One, I've put Asian Invasion at the top of the heap. Charlie had a commanding win in the Iron Fist position, and Jenny's win the Anchor match gave AZN just enough to squeak by Hydra. The depth of this team is their greatest strength, and I expect them to win against the Discombobulators next week.

2) (6) ROYAL PAIN (1-0) It was a struggle for me to decide amongst the other three winning teams who should go into this slot. But to me, Royal Pain had the most impressive win of the week. I wondered what Jewell was thinking by not having Dizzy or Rena fight. But then Jenai won the Iron Fist in her first match *ever*, and Issy and PJ (as a substitute) chipped in wins to upset a strong Team Dirty. Hats off to Royal Pain, but they'll have their hands full against Top Flight.

3) (8) DISCOMBOBULATORS (1-0) Don't worry, Bobs, I'm impressed by you too. Maverick stepped up with a strong win in the Iron Fist match, and Cassius had a clutch win against the ghost of Vanion to upset Top Flight. Skid's win against the veteran Bane shows hope for the future of this team. Am I ready to call them a legitimate playoff threat? Eh, we'll see. But you did put a smile on my face, so good luck against Asian Invasion next week. You're going to need it.

4) (7) ROCK HARDS (1-0) The last of our Week One winners is the Rock Hards. Juliane's upset of Darik was nice, but the big point maker for the week was Blondie's Iron Fist performance, where he rocked Gren . . . hard, with a shutout win. That is great news for Kruger's bunch, who could use a go-to guy like Blondie to anchor the team around. I like what I see from this team, and I think they'll do well next week against Hydra.

5) (4) HYDRA (0-1) Close, but not quite, as Hydra loses by a handful of points to Asian. The bad guys from Great of Strength, Anubis and Xanth, both picked up wins, but it wasn't enough. Still, Sylus should feel good that his team gave them a fight. They'll be facing the Rock Hards, Discombobulators, and Royal Pain in the next three weeks, so if this team wants to see the playoffs, now is the time for them to pick up some wins.

6) (2) TEAM FIST (0-1) Okay, so that shutout loss by Gren in the Iron Fist match was painful to watch. But Kheldar and Apple both had solid wins, so Team Fist Nation shouldn't fret just yet. This team still has plenty of depth, and will be a contender down the stretch. If TMF can turn it around and gain a win this week against a wobbly Team Dirty, things should get back on the right track.

7) (5) TEAM DIRTY (0-1) I didn't see that one coming. Claire put up a fight in the Iron Fist, but they end up losing three out of four matches. Zack did get a big win against Jewell, but nothing much else to report. In their defense, Hope, Shadow, and Rick weren't fighting this week. They'll have to step it up against Team Fist next week, because they don't want to fall too far behind the pack.

8) (1) TOP FLIGHT (0-1) I've been trying to figure this one out too. Was it ring rust? Bane hasn't fought in a while. And Vanion is, you know, dead. So maybe they just need to get back in the groove of things after a lengthy break from last season. Vinny did get himself a win against Sal. I still think this team has way too much talent to not go to the playoffs, but Top Flight will need Bane and Vanion to step up if they are going to have success this season.

TEAMS ON THE RISE: Asian Invasion (1 from 3), Royal Pain (2 from 6), Discombobulators (3 from 8), Rock Hards (4 from 7)

OVERALL: You wanted excitement, you got it, with three upset wins this week to start things off. As the season wears on, things should settle a bit, but until then, it's anybody's guess as to which of these teams will win it all. Will Top Flight and Team Fist recover? Or will a newer team like Royal Pain or the Discombobulators shock the world? Keep watching the IFL to find out! I'll be back next week with my rankings, of course! Until then . . .

Later.
