Dear Oscar,

To begin, I'd like to express my apologies to you and to the dueling community at large for the
unorganized manner in which the Overlord challenge took place. Xenograg and I were having
trouble communicating and planning a time for the duel, as well as finding an RDI to call the
match.. Last Thursday was the deadline for us to have the duel, and as such it was thrown
together most hastily.. the planing began at 7 for a 9 o'clock duel.. I am currently endeavoring to
make sure this does happen for the challenge match.

~Kal...

Editorial: The Line Up

Well if it isn't one thing there's another, eh dueling fans? A new pestilence has come upon the
land... a new scourge to be smited (smote?) with the mighty pen. ::strikes a pose::
::unstrikes:: No actually it's a pretty easy problem to fix once addressed... so here it is getting
addressed. I don't think any of us hasn't had this happen to us. Here's the situation: There are
two callers regaling you not to IM both of them with your duel request. You play eeny meenie
miney moe and pick one and you consequently wait for an hour while the other one calls 3 duels
that were set up after yours. Ouch.
I've run across several different styles to combat this. One duelist who chose not to be identified
defiantly IMs both RDIs and when one calls the duel, the party IMs the other RDI and cancels the
request. Their defense being "I IM them to cancel, why shouldn't I get my duel in as quickly as I
can? The people they don't seem to like are the ones who don't tell them their duel was already
called." Another style is to wait a few minutes to see which caller seems to be the least busy or
even IM the caller asking how long the queue is. But most duelers call into one or the other and
then wait.
The problem with this system of having two or more lines is that the customers in the slower line
tend to get cranky. I think we've all witnessed (or experienced first hand) some of the bad-
mouthing of RDIs that goes on when this happens. It is quite impolite to say the least, but you
have to see their point. If someone has waited for an hour for their duel watching duels that were
set up after theirs, begin and end in that time, they are going to get upset. It doesn't excuse any
name calling, but it does point to a problem that needs a solution.
So here's a solution. Currently we have the "Grocery Store" queue system in place. You judge
the lines and choose what you hope will be the shortest or fastest. Why not change this and make
it the "Bank" or "Post Office" system in which all duels go into one line and are called in order?
The first RDI of the night can be in charge of the list until he/she goes, then the Overlap would
take charge, and when he/she goes they would turn the list over to the last RDI on duty. Persons
IMing an RDI with a duel request would be directed to the list keeper if they have IMed the
wrong person. Keep the queue on a piece of paper instead of on the computer... and should be
fool proof in case of punts.
But then that's just my opinion... ~Oscar

BANE

The following is the latest in the exciting and oh-so-informative series of articles featuring various
duelers and their weapons. If you would like to see the story of your sword (broomstick, dagger,
submachine gun, etc) appear here, please get in touch with Simini x via email...

Duel of Swords AfterHours is where the night owls have come to expect post-duel sparring,
conversation and much drink. It was on a night like this that I sat with Siera Redwin, mugs of ale
between us, and we began to speak of her infamous sword, Bane.
I myself have never been on the receiving end of this blade's edge, but when I held it in my hand,
I could see that it was the fine craftmanship combined with Siera's formidable skill that brought
them such notoriety... extremely well-balanced, the blade is of heavy steel with a twisted iron core
that is visible as a tapering groove, having the appearance of an etched serpent. There is a rune
just below the crossbar, and years of use has worn the etching to shallowness. Siera herself knows
not the meaning of the symbol. Other than that, Bane is quite a simple weapon -- steel hilt bound
in leather, with a wool-lined leather scabbard, bearing the talon of the Redwin Army.
As I held the blade in my hands, Siera watched me closely, red braid falling down her back, ale
in front of her, feet on the table. I looked up at her once, intending to ask her a question, but my
query must have been a common one, for she answered before it was asked. "Nay, 'tis not
enchanted, many have asked, for it has a bit of lore told of't. But nay, 'tis naught but steel,
well-tempered, fed with blood when it hungers, and only so strong as my arm may make it. Were
it other, it would find no home in my hand." She smiled and took a draught of ale as if for
emphasis.
I nodded and handed the double-edged sword back to its owner. I couldn't help but admire the
way she handled the deadly thing, with ease, skill and grace, even as she was just re-sheathing it. I
asked her how the moniker "Bane" came about, and her eyes took on a look full of memories. She
paused a moment before speaking, wetting her mouth with yet another draught of ale before
beginning.
"'Twas upon my return to Redwin some years after I left -- aye, I was the daughter to the Baron
there..." She stopped for a moment, with a wry look of some distaste. "...when I was confronted
with my own guard -- for they said I had died, you see. Lo, there was the same boy that as a child
I used to tease for mean birth when I was a young lady proper." Here again she stopped, glancing
at me with a rueful smile. I returned her smile, but knew better than to make a comment on that.
"And yet he swore he would serve the gate of the manor itself and so he was right. As I contested
him there, he took in my dress -- for 'twas no gown, but the trappings of manhood as he knew't.
And as his gaze fell upon the blade at my hip, he said, 'that sword will be the bane of Redwin'.
For what court, what people, would accept such an unnatural creature as I without
condemnation?" Her smile becomes droll and bitter, and she looks into her mug of ale and drains
it. I nodded to a serving boy to bring her another, and she continued. "And so, the nameless thing
was titled. I was eighteen then, and so it has stood by my side for seven years.
"This blade has been wielded in defense of Redwin and Cadonia in every campaign, every
skirmish, every dispute since and drawn in the duels between. Once have I hung it upon the wall
and once again have I taken it back to me," the warrior adds, with a dry smile. "It seems that our
future is to be shared yet. And do I die, I do not know that it matters a good deal to me where the
thing goes... it has proven my bane as well, a'times. A sword is not so great a thing in my opinion
as the heart of the lout that wields it, though..." Here she tilts her head, musing for a moment,
"...did I have the choice, I might wish it to Feadur's possession, as he and the weapon would do
one another justice."
At this thought, I smiled at her, and the conversation turned to lighter matter, continuing into
the night, the passage of time marked only by empty mugs.

Overlord Kalamere
          by Simini and Oscar
The sounds of clanging metal and cheering people are but whispers of one's memory... the arena
bleachers, now empty, look down into a sandy arena and watch phantom fighters with empty
eyes... the taste of anticipation is gone from the air, with only the faint odor of sweat remaining...
the Red Dragon's Great Hall is quiet but for the relaxed conversation between two friends... a
redheaded reporter and a handsome, newly-crowned young Overlord.
The tall man sips his brandy and regards the woman with sapphire eyes, and his ever-present
charm. Both of his blades rest comfortably in their boot sheaths. The flush of victory still colors
his cheeks and paints his eyes with an excited flare. As they talk, he sips from a brandy snifter that
is occasionally refilled by onlooking friends.

DOSTODAY: When Luth made that final call, what was your first thought?
KALAMERE: My first thought?? ::chuckles:: "Goddess... I won..."
DT:  ::grins:: And your second?
KAL: After tha' ... I was thankful tha' Raven an Sahara were here to see it... and only
wished that Stephen and Bishop could have been here... and Dare. Foremost though... I would
have liked Stephen to have been here.
DT: Your first "official" statement?
KAL: First... I want to thank every one that came out to watch on such short notice. I want
apologize to all those I dinna get to talk to after the match as my mind was still reelin' in the shock
o' victory.
DT:  ::grins:: Anything else?
KAL: And to thank Merewynn fer originally introducin me to the duels, and Stephen, Bishop
and Dare fer givin' me a skill level to strive fer. I think tha's everybody...
DT: I didn't know Bishop instructed you, Kalamere...
KAL: No one instructed me lass... ::smiles::
DT: ::smiles:: Ah... what is your history with Bishop and Stephen, then?
KAL: He was and still is a great duelist who taught me much through our fights. Same
wi' Stephen.

Another staff member caught up with Kala once he'd had a chance to relax and reflect...

DT: How did you feel after beating the legendary Xenograg so soundly?
KAL: I felt as anyone would fill.. I was thrilled.. The title of Overlord is one to which I have
aspired since my first days in the duels.. while this was not the sole reason for the issue of my
challenge, one can hardly help but be elated at attaining a goal so dearly held. The fact that it was
Xenograg that held the seat does little to enhance this feeling, despite my great respect for his
skill. The Overlord, whomever he or she may be, is the best our sport has to offer at a given point
in time.

DT: How long have you been dueling?
KAL: My very first duel was just shy of a year ago. I believe it was May last year when I made
my first visit.

DT: Siera Red appears to be your next opponent, how do you feel about fighting her?
KAL: Siera is indeed the next challenger to the title, though admittedly it was a race between
her and Fantasy RC. I would say that I feel the same about dueling her as I did about facing
Xeno. Although it is I who is the Overlord this time, I will once again be viewed as the underdog.
Siera is a fantastic duelist and more than deserves a shot at the seat. She has been a warlord for
longer than I have even been a duelist, and with that comes a great amount of respect. This is a
respect that I have not, as yet, been able to earn. Perhaps it is due to my lack of tenure in the
duels, or possibly just becomes she holds so much more. The simple fact, however, is that she
will be favored to win. One can easily see this by looking at the alignment of the Barons. Since
the system has been put in place, I am the first Overlord who has had a greater number of
Renegade Barons below him than Loyalist.
This being said, let me assure you that I will not be simply handing her the title. As most of our
duels in the past, this promises to be a grand exhibition of skill... and I have every intention of
winning. Being put into the position I have been has kept me from becoming complacent and to
be honest.. I am much more comfortable being the underdog, than as the Champion.

DT: Do you have any special plans for dueling as Overlord? Any changes to suggest? Any ideas
for the future of dueling?
KAL: I really don't have any grand designs for DoS. I love the sport and I love the way it has
progressed. Xenograg has begun work with the RhyDin malitia, and I am content to let him
continue that. I am not now, nor was I ever a soldier. Military training is not something that I am
familiar with, so I shall leave those endeavors in the hands of one who does have expertise in the
area.
The only thing that I would like to see in the duels, is the older duelist being more free with
aiding the newcomers. This is something that was commonplace when I first began, but that has
dwindled some since then. In this, I do not mean setting up schools.. those, I believe, often
become selective and too time consuming for instructors and students alike.. I simply mean one
duelist going up to another after a duel and offering some aid in improving his or her technique.
The only other thing that I would add to that, is my views to about the matrix. Mind you, I
have never given a matrix to a beginning dueler, but at the same time, I fail to see the evil in doing
this. Many higher ranked duelist express a desire not to duel new duelists because they are
"unpredictable." Well the simple reason behind this is that they do not know what the moves will
do. Attaining fancy moves is enough of a goal to strive for when you are a beginner, completing a
matrix, on the other hand, is no more than an inconvenience. Personally, I don't see why a matrix
shouldn't be attached to the rules. This would go a long way to solving both the unpredictability
problem as well as removing some of the mystique. Alas, I'm afraid there are too many duelist set
in their ways, thinking this is just not the way it is to be done, and therefore change in this area
will not be coming any time soon... this is no more than my personal thoughts.

DT: What is your background? Where did you come from?
KAL: I'm afraid I can tell you very little about my background. I have just recently retained the
majority of my memory ((see Raven's Tower for details)), but as yet, most of it is fuzzy. What I
can tell you is that I lived and worked in a city known as ShadoDale. My occupation... well..lets
just say I accept gold to take care of other people's problems... I discovered RhyDin, quite by
mistake, around Feb. last year. I took an instant liking to the place, and spent the next several
months coming here regularly to relax after a day of work.. More recently, I have moved in with
Raven, the Ace of Swords, and his wife, Sahara Rose. I stay in a guest room in Raven's tower
and am currently being instructed by Marewynn in the use of mind magik's.

Congratulations to returning new-comer Murph (NCC2014) who managed to stun himself as
well as the spectators by beating long time combatant and duelling favorite the sapphire ranked
Dallara. Well done!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever wonder how the Outback got it's name? Lie awake at night trying to figure it out? No?
Well, sit back and enjoy as you read all about it!

It was a dusty afternoon. The man entering the inn wore a worn raincoat and a
long-past-it's-prime fedora. Coughing, the middle-aged man, whose battle for a trim figure had
long since been lost, paused at the doorway of the inn. The smell of smoke and melted wax
emanated from the main room, mingling with the smells of all manner of ale and wine as well as
the aroma of a stew wafting from the kitchens. Figures of an amazing assortment of color, shape
and armament occupied the tables and benches of the main room. Chewing on an old cigar as he
fumbled in his pockets for a pencil, the man pulled out a small notebook. Struggling to read his
own scribbles, he felt a figure brush past him, muttering something about humans pretending to be
doors. The man mumbled something in reply, without ever noticing the heavy axe strapped to it's
back or the pointy teeth.
Gazing about the room, sighing like a man bored with his life and his job, he shuffled over to the
bar, his eyes locked on the little notebook. Looking up for a moment, he mumbled his question,
"I'm told there's a place in this burg for fighting. Someplace where I could get into a good old
fist-fight. You ever heard of it?"
The figure at the bar turned her gaze towards him. Her eyes went over him, discounting the
possibility that he was a dueler of any kind. Throwing her thumb someplace over her shoulder she
replied "out back", before returning her attention to her drink and her feline companion.
Scribbling in his notebook "Out back..." the man mumbled what could have been a thank you,
or it could have been a grocery list. Turning away, he shuffled out of the inn to find a public
phone. Scraping together a couple of coins the man dialed the number on a card that had the
faded words Acme Press written upon it.
The static on the phone cleared, "Sports desk..." said a disinterested voice.
The man pulled out his notebook and peered at his scribbles "Yeah,...found the place...it's called
the 'Outback'."
"That all you got?" the voice answered back.
   "Yeah...".
The voice snorted, "yeah, right. All right, I write up something."
Setting the phone back on the hook, the rain-coated man turned out and peered down the road.
With a sigh, he put away his notebook, resettled his fedora and set off down the road, coughing
every few dozen yards as he wandered out of town.

Renegade Red

DoSToday's newest reporter, Devon Goral, caught up with Siera Red the other day...

SIERA RED: ::inclining her head:: I trust that you encountered no difficulty with my guard...
DOSTODAY: ::chuckles:: Tis an honour to meet you finally.
SR: Finally? Gads, I did not know 'twas a thing you wished. ::chuckle::
DT: ::chuckles:: Excuse me if I seem overly gracious. Tis my style.
SR: ::shrugging a shoulder with a chuckle:: Excuse me if I seem without grace. 'Tis mine.
DT: Anyway, I'd appreciate any thoughts you could give me about the upcoming Overlord
challenge.
SR: ::pursing her mouth into the wry, half-smile:: Rot, but I hope I duel well.
DT: So, any special plans?
SR: ::arching a brow::
DT: Vying for such a position is no easy task.
SR: Aye... I'll bring my sword. ::chuckling, thinking the interview process an odd formality:: Nay,
::shaking her head:: 'tis no easy task. But were it easy... 'twould not be coveted. ::searching for a
moment, her hair falling into the trunk:: I did speak with Kalamere...
DT: ::scribbles some notes::  Really?
SR: Aye, I did speak to him. This surprises you?
DT: Not at all. Would you mind telling me the substance of your conversation?
SR: ::shrugging a shoulder:: We spoke on things that friends might. Of the duels, of wine, of
friends. ::smile::
DT: How do you feel about Kalamere?
SR: About Kalamere? ::tilting her head, seeming surprised at the question:: How do you mean?
DT: Just general feelings.
SR: Not about his dueling?
DT: I trust ye are good friends?
SR: ::rather queer look::
DT: I'll get to his dueling in a moment. ::grins::
SR: We are friends, but that is a thing newly established. 'Tisn't that we were at odds afore... 'Tis
only that we only met in the ring. And so we dueled, we saluted... and we left. ::lifting her
shoulder once more::
DT: ::nods, writing:: How do you feel about dueling him for such a high-profile position?
SR: Rather the same that I would feel about dueling anyone for a high-profile position... I've a
wary respect for his skill. But only a fool would not have that.
DT: Aye... Will you be doing anything special to prepare?
SR: Have you dueled him?
DT: No. He's always been beyond my league.
SR: Well then, you ought to. Beyond your league?
DT: I'm afraid my dueling still needs a great more work.
SR: You'll not get that work without dueling the likes of him. ::smiling:: I do not know the
Overlord well, but I'd wager that he'd not find it a stoop a'tall to duel one who earnestly wished a
match...
DT: ::nods:: Perhaps. Unfortunately, I just had a rather bad setback, and it'll take time to
recover. I'm sure he would if I asked.
SR: Ah. For that I am sorry.
DT: Thank you. I trust I'll be back in the runnings soon.
SR: To prepare then? I'll have a drink. ::wry smile:: When you are, I should like a match. ::smile::
DT: And is that all? ::nods, smiling:: Thank you.
SR: Nay, not truly... I did spar with Amaltea before she took her title... I have asked that she give
me a match as well, as she did afore I fought Falon for his rank.
DT: So you plan on going into this match with little more preparation that you would with a
match of lesser importance?
SR: Sooth, there is little else. If I am not prepared, there is naught I may do in the few days
betwixt now and then to make up for't. And my friend... I fight all matches with equal
importance. 'Tis the commoners who are often the bane of me...
DT: Then per'aps we should duel sometime soon.
SR: I should like that. I'll beg you to be kind... as I've a match on Thursday.
DT: Tell me, was there a particular time when you decided that you were going to try to go all
the way?
SR: There were times when I might very well have challenged... when Valmion was Overlord he
did ask it of me. But there was such a queue, that 'twas not possible then.
DT: Some people go into the duels, not really caring to elevate their positions. Then, later, they
change their minds.
SR: Aye, some do that.
DT: Others, enter into everything with the intention to take it to its limit. ::leans forward:: What
did you do?
SR: Aye, and some do. ::nodding:: I entered the duels at the bidding of a friend... and proceeded
to loose no less than mayhap 10 or more matches. My blasted intent was to win something.
::warm chuckle then growing more serious:: But an occasion arose... And from there 'twas my
intent to learn and so succeed. Whether the rank came with it or no did not matter, though the
rank did come along after all.
DT: Can you point to any particular reason for your immense successes of late?
SR: As of late? ::laughing heartily::
DT: Why are you at this point? What got you here?
SR: Blast, my friend... but 'twas not so long ago that I had a losing streak the length of my
sword... ::touching the hilt of the long bastard sword::
DT: ::frowns:: I know what that's like.
SR: As do I. ::wry smile::
DT: I was once nine wins over losses. Now I'm four.
SR: Ah, and that does happen. Mayhap when we duel I'll help you remedy that, eh?
DT: The last three weeks have been most horrid.
SR: What got me here is that this is where I find myself... A baron who would take for Cadonia
what she has not taken afore... for the sake of honor... And my swordbrother.
DT: I'm still relatively new to the duels. I've really only been following the Overlordships recently.
It seems like every challenge of late has been successful. Any thoughts on that?
SR: ::nodding:: It does seem so... and the only explanation I might offer is that there are more
warlords... there are barons as well. Therefore, there are more duelers of skill. One Overlord
cannot anticipate the mind and arm of all. In the past... there were few warlords and they were
more intimately acquainted with one another's skill, I'd wager.
DT: Since there has been such a turn-over rate, and assuming you are successful... Do you think
you'll have any better of a chance of hanging on?
SR: I think... ::considering a moment:: I think that for me to say that would assume more
knowledge of each duelist on my part than I have. I think it would assume great arrogance. I've
no better chance.
DT: Any parting words?
SR: Aye.
DT: Go ahead.
SR: You owe me an ale now.
DT: T'will be a pleasure to repay.
SR: And I'll have that duel when you are ready. ::smile::
DT: Actually, I might be ready sooner than I thought.
SR: Sooth?
DT: If I ever catch you in there, and yer free...
SR: ::rising from her chair:: Do you see me a'tall, I shall be free to duel you. ::inclining her head to
him::
DT: I thank you for the interview.
SR: Ever welcome... ah... ::realizing she never got his name::
DT: ::extends a hand:: Devon. Devon Goral.
SR: ::clasping his hand:: Ah, well then, 'tis a pleasure. I am Siera.
DT: ::shakes her hand, with a firm grip:: I look forward to meeting you again.
SR: ::shakes his hand with a firm grip, the callouses along her palm rough, releasing his hand::
And I you.
DT: Either in friendly conversation, or combat.
SR: Either is friendly to me.
DT: ::nods::
SR: And now, I shall return to the duels with your leave...
DT: ::bows::  Good evening.
SR: You are welcome to stay as you will...
DT: And may both of our records flourish this eve.

WELCOME BACK!

Dare Ltan, beloved brother of dueling came back to the rings last weekend and brought a smile to
many faces. Dare was missed by many when he had to leave RhyDin for a time. Many good
duels to you in the future Dare.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

A little bird left a mail note that many time Overlord, Xenograg celebrated a birthday recently.
Happy birthday, Xeno.

NEW BARON!

Feadur successfully challenged Lord Zephyr for the title of Baron. He then proclaimed himself
Renegade, citing an ancient tradition among his elven people. No word yet on if the dark elf will
continue to remain Renegade should Red win the title tonight.

NEW WARLORDS!

Congratulations to Morgan Crow and Merilsa for stepping up to the coveted rank.
