Oscar,

Let me preface this letter by sayin' tha ye' run a fine publication, an tha' I oft enjoy readin' i'...
However, I fin' one small problem wi' yer last issue... tha' bein' yer statements as t' the identity o'
me lady o' honor.. In our interview ye' stated 'er name t'be "Marewynn" an in yer print o' Gloin's
announcement, ye printed her name as "Marian".. While both o'these are verra nice names, an' if I
knew them, I'm sure I'd thin' both o'these lasses mos' pleasant.. alas, neither is me lady o' honor..
The lass tha' is to (or "has" since ye' likely won't get this till after the match) stand by me side is
Merewynn.. She is a verra dear friend o'mine, an I'd appreciate i' if ye' could clarify this in yer next
issue..

Thank ye'
~Kal...

Lady Arane would like to invite all you unfortunate victims of mistimed ducks and sidesteps who
have lost their fancy beehives to a wicked thrust or high cut to come on down to her hair salon
today and get a new 'do, just in time for the summer slaughter soon to begin.

Lady Arane does a wide variety of 'dos and would be happy to help you choose the one that's just
right for you. Come on down today.

Editorial Stuff

Well let's see... ::digging through all the controversial issues and past columns:: What say we do
an update this time? Yeah yeah, read that: "Oscar has nothing new to complain about and is
doing one of those flashback episodes so he doesn't have to be creative" heh.
No actually, things have changed since my first few editorials and it seems as good a time as any
to address the changes. Well let's see... in the very first issue of the magazine there was no
editorial at all. The first was about jumping followed closely by two on the change in the fancy
rule, which if you look at it today, seems to be working just fine.
There was one in there about the standings, which have been prompt and fairly accurate since
that time.
There was one about why it's so hard sometimes to get a duel, which hasn't changed much from
what I've seen, and it still baffles me.
There were several on the meaning of honor. Sheesh.
And then the last two about a bigger room and the way the queues are run. Have things
changed? Well last weekend RDI Luth got punted and was unable to return for a very long time
because the room was jammed full of... yes... you guessed it... duelers, and no one wanted to
leave and lose their space, when there was no guarantee that Luth would make it in anyway as it
was taking new people about 15-45 minutes to get in even with the fancy programs like
Powertools. Word's not out on the grapevine if this problem is being looked into or not, but I
would think that when even the poor RDIs can't get in, that it's probably a major concern of the
staff's. One would hope anyway.
((WOW! Now here's some service! Someone lit some fires over in the management area
apparently! I wrote this little editorial this afternoon, went online this evening to pull of Nick's
poem, and lo and behold!! A dueling HALL! You heard it here first folks :) Now let's give a big
round of applause to Kairee and her staff for listening :) ~Oscar ))
As for the way the queues are handled, it did seem that there was a slight difference last week in
them. However, there was no announcement to this effect, or any suggestions by the RDIs as to
how they should be IMed. We can hope that the powers that be will consider a new method of
queuing up and implement it.
But then as always... that's just my opinion. ~Oscar

Ask Doctor Stupid!
DoS Today's advice column

Dear Dr. Stupid,
What is the gallery that runs around the walls of the Duel of Swords?
-Things Are Looking Up... At The Wall

Dear Wall,
That's known as the assassin's gallery. It dates back to last week, when hired killers were placed
in the gallery to attack duelists who were winning. However, that's all changed, and now the only
people up there wear dark robes and carry crossbows.
-Dr. Stupid

Dear Dr. Stupid,
If one were to say, oh, steal the till from the RDI, when would be the best time to do it?
-Hypothetically Broke

Dear Hypo,
Right after closing, before RDI Kairee comes around to take the cash each night. But that's just
my guess.
-Dr. Rich in Rio

Dear Dr. Stupid,
Just what is in the Star's End swimming pool?
-Ewwww...

Dear Mr. E,
I went out yesterday to take samples from the pool. After psyching myself up to the task with
eight bottles of wine, I stumbled to the pool and fell in. Due to a malfunction in the DrinkMaster
2500 Bar computer, the drain was opened, and I was sucked down into the sewer.
There, I met a small blue-furred iguana, who offered me a silver coin in trade for a maple staff. I
followed his directions down the steam-filled corridor to a captive water spirit, who wanted the
staff for her sister, a wood spirit. After I gave her the staff, she then made me hit the third brick
up on the left wall, which shattered into several pieces, revealing a small hole behind it.
In the hole was a light-green bottle labeled "drink me". I've got it here, and lets see what it
does... Mmmm, tasty. Sorta like wine, but a bit tangy. When did my keyboard get so large? And
my desk is huge! My pen must weigh a ton now, and I c

News from the Outback...
    by JakeThrash

Dates: 95-04-22 & 95-04-29

Duelling has been kinda light these past weekends. As usual Percival has been haunting the
Outback, fighting anyone and everyone in his quest to take the Diamond. He's gonna have to
fight for it though, because Prince Fyre has been itching for a shot at the Diamond too. In
conjunction with this, boss man RDI Panthr has been cooking up some ideas for an event to take
place in the very near future. Keep your eyes on the DoF folder for more word on what's coming.
Welcome to new duelers Ranma 5tme, Garcilaso, NickOfTyme, and Gimli. Congrats to Ranma
for some very impressive first time duelling. (Ranma did a good job of making Percival sweat for
once). Also a warm welcome back to Gio Pietro who hadn't been seen in the Outback for some
time.
Jake's Brute of the Week goes to Murphy2014 (previously known as NCC2014) for his match
with Percival last weekend. In the end Percy got the win, but Murph made him work harder for it
than anyone has in weeks. (It took forever to get the mats dried from all the sweat!)

   Percival vs. Murphy2014
   ---------------------------------------
   Percy Jabs, Murphy Dodges away!
Percy Feints a Jump Kick and Murphy SnapKicks but nobody scores.
Percy Jabs, Murphy Flips him into the ropes.
Percy Fancy ArmBlocks (showing off them biceps), but Murphy LegSweeps him!
Percy tries a Fancy Flip, Murphy just Flips.
Percy Feints a Chop and Murph Jabs.
Percy and Murph smack shins with mirroring LegSweeps! Ouch!
Percy SpinKicks, Murph tags the spinning Percy with a Jab!
Percy Feints a Chop and fakes Murph into Dodging.
Percy Feints a SnapKick and Murph tries out that JumpKick.
Percy tries to Flip Murph Fancily, but Murph drops low to LegSweep instead.
   *** Anybody's match after 12 rounds! ***
Percy ends it by using a Fancy ArmBlock to stop Murph's quick Jab!

Both opponents fought well and deserve congratulations. Their skillful duelling made one of
the highlight matches of the season and in this orc's opinion exemplifies the best kind of duelling.
Finally Jake wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to ShanniCltn who was willing to call an
un-official bout to let an old orc get in a little practice of his own with Percy.

Tired of climbing up your chimney and emerging covered in soot?

Tired of going for a romantic slide down your chimney with your sweetheart and tasting sooty
lips at the bottom? (Or maybe on the way down if you're an expert.)

Then give me a call at 1-800-CHIMNEY. Our operators are standing by (mainly me, and I'm
not fully operational), waiting to hear your pleas for help and come rushing to the rescue. And
we're cheap! In fact, we usually forget to collect payment...

So be the first in your neighborhood to have a clean chimney. That neighbor may always beat
you in the yearly Xmas lawn decorations contest, but you'll be damned if his chimney's cleaner!
Remember, 1-800-CHIMNEY. Call now. Or later, just call!

And famous by my sword
      James Graham, 1612-1650
*****************************************************

Well, loveys, the column is chockfull of goodies this issue. Did you know that swirling all about
the various duels and challenges and jockeying for position, real life goes on around us? In one
case, several weeks ago, Ecore, as seems to be his wont at times, behaved boorishly. He
criticized Simini, implied she and Aspendale were more than swordsiblings, nearly insulted
Aspendale, publicly chastised people, including ThGreyBard and Jonalyn. He even physically
attacked people. Subsequent apologies were graciously accepted by many. But there was more
drama and excitement in this confrontation than in many of the duels....

Set against this the strained relationship of Elysium and Aspendale. Mates for many months,
blissful in RDI and Rhydin, the couple's relationship has become tenuous since he became active
in DoS. Think there's a connection? Many DoS habitu‚s aren't exactly welcoming to those who
aren't as enthralled with the dueling as they are...and it must be particularly difficult to be the mate
of a DoS when you are not a dueler yourself. Of course, Elysium may simply be reacting to
Aspen's strange behavior in general these days. This irrational hatred of Feadur - a reasonable
move to distrust dark elves in general, yet it is clear to anyone that Fea is not a typical dark elf.
He is the soul of honor. So, is Aspendale's nature changing? He let his presumably beloved mate
twist in the wind when she was attacked by supposed friends of his - whether she was right or
wrong, this was odd and unchivalrous behavior on his part. Back in Hollywood, we'd say he had
a dysfunctional upbringing...but in Rhydin, it's more likely he's possessed by a demon. But then,
maybe it's simply that Elysium is possessed by a green monster. Aren't relationships just
*fascinating*?

Speaking of Feadur...that gallant and handsome gentleman...he not only defeated RC in their duel,
5-0 (it was over so fast, the crowd was confused) but later that same night fought CaptLlewel, the
slave overseer, in a death match to rescue Clara Tal from Llewel's clutches. Now--- THERE was
a duel...((and THERE was superb roleplaying))...Of course, yours truly was deeply involved in
the action, much against her preferred journalistic objectivity. Amazing what the plight of a
hapless child can do to rouse the protective instincts, eh? Anyway...Feadur had stood Llewel's
repugnant accusations of cowardice long enough and decided to force him to duel or desist and to
free the girl-child. Random scenes fill my memory: the tension-filled dueling hall, Jonalyn -
every fiber tense - facing away from the ring in order to manage that tension, Siera - that woman
of action - being forced to watch as Feadur fought a death duel (and doncha just wonder what
Llewel thought Siera would feel for him, should he kill Feadur?), RDI Kal's (was it his first night
as RDI?) calling of the duel (and an admirable job too), LyloMarvin burning the Overlord's profile
into a tabletop amidst all the chaos in the hall, Clara Tal running into the ring and being dragged
out, even Bishop felt the strain of the scene from his duel in the next ring. Llewel's surged ahead
in the duel after trailing 4.5 to 2.5 after 11 and then Feadur battled to a tie. While some in the
crowd felt they deserved a death scene, others were grateful DoS would not be deprived of the
fine skills of these two individuals in future. Overall, my dears, we will boast through the years
that WE were there....while others will wish they were - on St. Crispin's Day - and...oh. Wrong
battle; wrong play. But the sentiment is appropriate. It was a grand fight. Congratulations to all.

On a lighter note....where's Gavilean/Gavillean/Gavilean S been lately? There's Luth, calling the
overlord match...and where's her hubby? Don't ask me. I'm not his type. Speaking of wandering
spouses, isn't it sad about Rayn and Aliyanna? I thought they actually had a chance...but Rayn is
drinking up half of Rhydin and Ali is off somewhere with their child. I think all these marriages
that break up should be required to post somewhere...and give reasons. I'm tired of relationships
that just fade away and then the people come back like Aphrodite from the bath---with nary a
spouse to mention in their past. Maybe I'll start a folder...
((editor would like to report that many of the details of Aliyanna and Rayn can be found in their
folder "Aliyanna & Rayn" in Red Dragon Innsights))

I extend my congratulations to Lord Harvest, the new ArchMage in Duel of Magic. In a grueling
series of duels, he defeated Mike XXVII, Daegarth, and then the great ConnorMcld to become
the second ArchMage in Rhydin's history. This room has quietly become one of the more fun
places to spend an evening. Perhaps there's something to be said for a new sport...and for lots of
neophytes. The tourney also marked Klytus' retirement from the RDI ranks. Rumor has it that he
may become a duelist himself in Duel of Magic. Now *that* will be something to see! And visit
DoM if you haven't already. The folks there are quite friendly and welcoming.

If you haven't seen the folder on Red Star yet, in Star's End, check it out. Finally some light and
not just heat is being generated. Interesting how it was removed from the boards and then
returned......

Well, all. See you around and about.

So ya' wanna be a fist-fighter...
---------------------------------------------

Welcome readers to the first in a series of articles and interviews relating to everyone's favorite
unarmed sport, the Duel of Fists. With me today is long-time dueler Jake Thrash who's been with
the Duel of Fists since it's inception. I didn't know what to expect when I met Jake. Sitting down
across from him in a booth at the Red Dragon Inn I noted a warrior's attitude about him. His eyes
seemed to wander the room keeping track of everything moving, while at any moment it seemed
as though he was capable of bursting out into extreme violence. At the same time, one hand
stayed glued to a mug of ale as if he feared someone was going to come along and swipe it. One
would be tempted to wonder about the mental faculties of a dueller that took over a year to reach
the rank of Emerald (when duellers like Dark Axe, Siera Red and Prince Fyre made it in a few
short weeks), however this reporter decided to refrain from asking when he noted the large
number of knives located about his orcish person. Other than his presence in the Outback, Jake
has been known to haunt the Inn at times as well as the Inn's basement where DoS takes place.
Jake is now also a referee for the Duel of Fists, and he can be found calling matches during most
weekends.
DoSToday: So tell me Jake, can I call you Jake? What is the Duel of Fists all about?
JakeThrash: Beatin' people up.
DT: Pardon me?
JT: Beatin' people up with yer fists.
DT: That's what the Duel of Fists is all about?
JT: Well ok, that's not the answer the boss would give.
DT: The boss?
JT: Panth. He's the boss.
DT: BlkPanther?
JT: Yeah, that's him.
DT: What would his answer be?
JT: The Duel of Fists is an event where duellers of all sizes and styles can come together to test
their prowess against each other in a contest of unarmed combat skill.
DT: How is the Duel different from the Duel of Swords or the Duel of Magic?
JT: It's strictly no weapons allowed, so we almost never have to mop blood off the floor after the
place closes for the night.
DT: So, no one can get hurt?
JT: Well we get some pretty good bruises and people limpin' out of the rings, but our overhead
on band-aids is much smaller than the Duel of Swords. Also, after gettin' all them bruises, we
usually have lots of people in need of pain-killers; we are doin' great business at the bar.
DT: What about the Duel of Magic?
JT: :: look of distaste ::
DT: You don't like the Duel of Magic?
JT: No, no..that's not it...the Duel of Magic is great. It's just a racial thing :) Orcs don't do
magic.
DT: Now that you mention it, there aren't that many orcs around Rhydin. Any reason you think
that might be the case?
JT: :: shrugs :: No idea. Maybe it's a conspiracy?
DT: Alright, so let's talk about the duelling itself.
JT: ok.
DT: What brought you to the Outback in the first place?
JT: :: fidgets a bit :: I was gettin' my butt kicked over in the Duel of Swords.
DT: That's what caused you to seek out the Duel of Fists?
JT: :: chuckle :: Yeah. I got tired of people pokin' holes in me all'a the time and wandered over
[to the Outback] when I saw the msgs about a new Duel openin' up.
DT: And you've been duelling there ever since?
JT: Yeah, whenever I could make it. I enjoy it, even tho' I can't get people to fight me as often
anymore.
DT: Why is that? Because of your rank?
JT: I think it's the tusks.
DT: So, since you are one the emerald ranked duellers, care to fill us in on what your secret is?
JT: My secret?
DT: Your style. What technique do you use when you enter the ring?
JT: Oh, ok. Well... I punch 'em inna face.
DT:  :: waiting expectantly ::
JT:  :: waiting expectantly ::
DT: :: confused look :: That's it?
JT: :: more confused look :: Um...I punch 'em inna face again?
DT: :: confounded look :: That's your secret? That's your technique?
JT: :: broad grin :: Yup. Punch 'em an' punch 'em until they fall down. Then mebbe kick 'em a
few times for good measure.
DT:  :: getting a disgusted look ::
JT: Throwin' 'em out of the ring is fun too....:: orc continues to ramble ::
DT: Well that's all the time we have for today. Join us again in the upcoming weeks as we
interview other duellers from the Outback, including old-timers Siera Red and PrinceFyre, as well
as some promising new-comers.

Duel of Magic Beach-Blast
"Tales from the Isle"
by BrdwayDan

The Duel of Magic has progressed greatly from its humble beginnings as the 'third duel'. Under
RDI Klytus, it has grown and grown.

On 4/30, the second Arch-Mage Tournament took place. This monthly duel between the top
mages to determine an arch-mage for the next cycle went off without a hitch.
The first round had the four mages competing:
Daegarth vs. Mamusia MikeXXVII vs. Lord Hrvst

After a grueling 7 rounds, Daegarth won over Mamusia with a score of 5-3, and Harvest beat
Mike 5.5-4.5 after 16 rounds, going into overtime for the first time ever in the Arch-Mage
Tournament.

The second round had the two winners, Harvest and Daegarth dueling. Harvest came out
successful and moved on to the final round to battle against ConnorMcld, the arch-mage.
Round# Lord Hrvst: ConnorMcld: Score:
1 Dispel Magic Wizard Blades .5-0
2 Reflection Reflection 1.5-1
3 **Lost round** 1.5-1
4 Meteor Shower Mindwhip 2.5-2
5 Ghostform Dispel Magic 2.5-2
6 Mage Bolt Ghostform 3.5-2
7 Meteor Shower Displacement 3.5-2.5
8 Arctic Blast Wizard Blades 4.5-2.5
9 Reflection Reflection 5.5-3.5

Harvest started off early with a lead that Connor just couldn't make up. First the early advantage
in round 1, and then the hit in round 6 gave Harvest a quick 1.5 point lead over Connor.

DoS Today salutes the newly crowned Arch-Mage of the Duel of Swords, Lord Hrvst!

In addition, RDI Klytus, founder of the Duel of Magic, is retiring. DoS Today would like to
extend a thank you to the Grand Magi, and a wish for good luck. :)

RED WINS!

Resplendent in the classic crimson and gold, Siera Red of Cadonia, wielder of Bane, faced the
Overlord Kalamere, in blue and silver with his legendary twin silver daggers, recently in a battle
that will not be soon forgotten. Ten rounds of excellent dueling proving that both of the duelers
were evenly matched and in great form. The Great Hall was packed to the rafters with the
spectators and many folks were unable to see clearly for the press of people. It was also a time
for some of the very oldest of duelers to come out of the woodwork such as MeMonk and the
well-loved Jade One.
Indeed Red even dedicated the duel to the memory of the late Gondar whom we've all heard so
much about. A favorite of the innkeeper, Kairee if you'll remember. She was seconded by
Renegade (at that time) Dark Elf Feadur, and her lady of honor was Dona Graciana Allegra
DiSanti. Kalamere's lady of honor was the lady Merewynn (spelled right this time, I would hope)
and he was seconded by Loyal Baron GldenSword. A good time seemed to be had by most with
the fans being about even on who they wanted to win, which is always refreshing. Even this
reporter was hard pressed to choose a favorite between the two duelists, as they are both
excellent duelers, and nice folk as well.

Here are the rounds:

Kalamere Siera Red
low cut low cut
thrust thrust
low cut fancy duck
high cut high cut
fancy circular parry fancy sidestep
thrust fancy circular parry
fancy circular parry thrust
high cut lateral parry
sidestep low cut

Whoa. What a duel. They were tied after seven rounds which led this reporter to ponder what
would happen if an Overlord match went to 15 without a clear winner? Should there be two
Overlords? Or would they continue to fight until there was a clear winner? Interesting question.

Baron Alignments: All the barons chose or were assigned loyalists but Aspendale, who declaring
his hatred for the Dark Elf, his race, and the way in which Feadur stood up for Siera Red against
Fantasy RC in the duel reported by Hedda, chose to align himself renegade.

Latebreaking news:

Welcome to the new Warlords Percival and Morgan Crow! Percival wrote to me not long ago
suggesting that the magazine write about some of the up and comers. Well it was a great idea but
before we could get around to it, this guy's a warlord. Well congrats!

Poetry in Motion...

A little poem taken from the DOS folder...

Subj: A simple poem.

I wrote this poem not too long ago and I really had fun with it. I probably could have included
every duelist I have ever met but it would have been quite lengthy. These few stood out in my
mind and I suppose Ill dedicate it too all who enjoy the heat of the dance and the spirit of the
duels. I'm not really good at writing, so I hardly ever post. And I truly dislike being reminded of
that fact each time I read a post that is of high caliber. But, this is what I've come up with and I
hope all who read it, enjoy.

I stepped into the Duel of Swords,
looking for a fight,
its something that I like to do,
on boring weekend nights.

I walked right in and sat right down,
and much to my surprise,
a lovely little lass I know,
had opened up her thighs.

"Wait!" I say,
"I do declare! Thats from another poem!"
I guess you see what's on my mind,
when sitting home alone.

I scanned the crowd from left to right,
and then from foot to head.
My eyes then stopped real briefly,
on the grand Siera Red.

She's really good I must confess,
and what I say is truth.
Just ask ole Stephen, he's a Prince
and he will say "For-sooth".

My eyes moved on across the crowd,
and guess who I did see?
Valmion with his lovely wife,
and Fantasy RC.

Then there's Bishop, standing tall.
unchallenged but by few.
Step into the ring with him,
he'll give you what you're due.

Falire's babbling about something,
Just what's he do with sheep?
You really ought to meet this guy,
known as the chimney sweep.

MadMadMax has just walked in,
and scans the crowd so cool.
In a booming voice he asks
"Ennybuddy wunnah dool'?"

I glance around the room again,
sometimes it seems so real,
the way one known as Feadur,
steps out of shadows and steel.

Merilsa's in the bleachers,
and she's always paying heed,
to all the loud commotion
when she's sipping on her mead.

Then I hear the lightning clash,
and think of all the strife.
As Falon steps out from the air,
with his amazing Sword of Life.

Vixennish1 is such a sight,
when she gets into the ring,
"She's dueling with a what?" I say.
"Is there really such a thing?"

FetherStaff has changed his name,
I hope there was no fuss.
Just remember now he's known
as I think Quilanthus.

What has happened to the one
known as PsiMysticate?
And DareLtan, that wacky lad
was it simply tragic fate?

Roustam enters for a time,
then glares and sets his jaw.
He must be thinking about again,
that thing thats called a draw.

I stand and stretch and look some more,
Almost begging for a duel.
Adjust my sword, then sit back down,
hoping I look cool.

Jola babe has just walked in,
I smile and wave hello.
Ulath enters right behind,
They both have afterglow.

I rise and walk up to the bar,
to get a little drink.
Passing Jonalyn, I smile
and give a little wink.

The Duel of Swords is lotsa fun,
and really kinda neat.
A loss is such a bummer,
and a win is such a treat.

The night is almost over,
and surprises it did bring,
you never know how it will go,
when you enter in the ring.

And a couple of addendum:

I've given lots of thought to it,
and this one here's for Luth.
I agree with all my heart with Max,
her name does rhyme with tooth.

The crowd is growing larger,
and its such an anxious hoarde.
Theres that cheerful Alkron,
known as also GldenSword.

I often envy those small few,
who duel and seem so free.
One that stands before my eyes,
the lass named Simini.

And Karnafexx couldn't help but add his two cents, but since he's so bad, you'll just have to read it
yourself in the DOS folder :)

Happy Dueling!
