Elegy...

  Last week in a senseless reminder of the violent world we live in, Kalaya Madison Traevon was
knifed to death in the orbiting space station Red Star. (member room Red Star Station for those
of you who have never heard of it... open every night of the week... plug plug)
  Kalaya, affectionately known as Madi by many, was an aficionada of all of the duels. She was a
well-loved member of the dueling community although somewhat new. Many of the duelers and
referees of the basement are wearing black armbands in her memory.
  We do live in a violent world. And this sport for all the healing, is a violent one as well.
::uncharacteristically doesn't have anything to say:: Madi will be missed, and this magazine's staff
wishes her well in whatever afterlife there may be.

SIERA RED  -  OVERLORD

  The challenges come in rapid succession. Barely did the Overlord's intercessor Karnafexx defeat
Elijah than Connor MacLeod stepped forward to challenge. Siera Red, taking more than perhaps
is her share of flack these days from many unexpected sources, stepped forward to the task on her
own not allowing anyone to step up first. The duel was fine and fair and Siera defeated the
Highlander MacLeod in a nine round nail biter, made even more tense by Falire's typically strange
behavior as he called the duel.

The Moves:
Siera Red      Connor MacLeod
fancy duck          fancy circular parry
thrust              low cut
high cut       fancy duck
fancy circular parry     stop hit
thrust              fancy circular parry
high cut       low cut
fancy sidestep      fancy circular parry
fancy lateral parry stop hit
fancy circular parry     thrust

  When asked if he had any comments Connor MacLeod (<-- note the 'a') had this to say: "Good
fight lots of blood. The better dueler won out in the end."
  Short interview with Siera:
DoSEditor: Now that you've proven, hopefully to everyone's satisfaction that you can win for
yourself. What are you going to do? ((besides go to Disneyland :D ))
Siera Red: Ah... ::quizzical look to Oscar:: Had I never won a duel for myself afore I was
Overlord?
DoSEditor: Well of course you have. Some folk don't seem able to remember that.
Siera Red: You say they do not remember't?
DoSEditor: Yep that's what I'm saying.
Siera Red: Mayhap 'twould be well for me if they remembered then. I was never handed my
rank as warlord... nor given the status of Baron. Nor was the Overlordship inherited. I have
never had what I did not win, nor desired what I could not take for myself.

  And hardly was that duel done when Falire came and challenged Siera, furthering adding fuel to
the incomprehensible vendetta Stephen Fortenza seems to have against the Overlord. This time,
she allowed Feadur to follow his tradition and step forward as Hand of Redwin to intercede. But
in a last minute switch, Baron Halo declared herself Renegade and stepped in and interceded on
Failre's behalf! Oh the confusion! Where was Marx with the programs when we needed him?!
  So the intercession match went like this:

Halo           Feadur
fancy circular parry     low cut
stop hit       high cut
fancy sidestep      fancy sidestep
fancy circular parry     high cut
high cut       stop hit
thrust              slash
low cut        high cut
fancy sidestep      fancy duck
low cut        thrust
fancy duck          fancy lateral parry

  Siera and Falire then took to the ring, opting to get it over with rather than waiting a few days.
The Rounds:

Siera Red      Falire
thrust              fancy circular parry
low cut        high cut
fancy circular parry     low cut
high cut       fancy circular parry
thrust              high cut
high cut       low cut

  Phew... what a bunch of dueling sports fans. We're getting close to Overlord burn-out if you ask
me, which you didn't.

  And if the Overlord challenges weren't enough to occupy your interest over the last couple of
weeks... there's more!

Baron challenges:

Morgan Crow vs. Baron Halo ---> Halo won
Red Zealot vs. Baron Percival ---> Zealot won (and wrote a very nice post about Percy in the
DOSFolder)
PrinceFyre vs. Baron Feadur ---> Feadur won

And these are coming up!
Ian R MacK vs. Xenograg ---> Coming to you THIS Sunday July 30 at 10pm Eastern time called
by the Overlord herself!
GnimishRW vs. GldenSword ---> Watch the boards for the Time and Date

PLAIN AND FANCIES
    by Hedda Hat
*****************************************************
I'll make thee glorious by my pen,
And famous by my sword
      James Graham, 1612-1650
*****************************************************

Darling readers...an eventful time in ye olde dueling halls the last few weeks. I speak of course of
the rather strange conflict between Siera Red and PrinceFyre. Truly...what is happening there?
Stephen, for no known reason - at least none that anyone but himself knows, has decided to
oppose our gracious Overlord on every opportunity. He confronts her and confounds her...never
with logical reason. For some reason, he sees ECore as the soul of honor...and I shall let the
humor of that pass without comment. Now, Siera and I have had our differences (she just doesn't
understand the contributions of the press) but I certainly could never fault her honor. Even that
short engagement to that Lylo character was handled with grace and aplomb. But Stephen? He
offers no explanation to her or to anyone, save a patently false point of view. So we are left
with...what? Either he is possessed - an all-too-frequent occasion in Rhydin - or he has some
ulterior motive. Perhaps he is trying to create a position for himself in order to get attention.
Perhaps he covers up for some military maneuver against Red's homeland. It is unfathomable at
present...yet I suspect his actions will become comprehensible within the month. Remember,
folks...you heard it here, first.

Then did you all see or hear of that stunning attack on Marx in the arena? MichaelJns, a man
beloved for his beheading of ECore, took leave of his senses and drew a sword on the aquatic
mammal. Leaping to Marx's defense and claiming brotherhood was Falire, of all people..err,
sweeps. Stunning, eh? Another strange combination. Jones was prevented from carrying out his
irrational act by Falire's swift action and the intervention of Jones' brother IanRMack.
Admittedly, Marx can be an irritating rodent. However, he does have integrity. Jones displayed
none.

Continuing the theme of irrational mayhem, in Star's End the other night, Rayn and his usual
cronies (including the aforesaid MichaelJns) had a shoot-out. Yes, yes, yes. We've seen and
heard this before. Wherever Rayn goes, gunfire (and Ree?) are sure to follow. And innocent
people are terrified and even hurt. That teenybopper temptress of old L.A., Cymbelyne, who was
traumatized by Rayn's last shoot-out at Star's End was sent cowering under whatever cover she
could find. Sir Ghost exploded some futuristic bomb. It was a miracle that no one was hurt.
Except, of course, for MichaelJns, who finally paid for his past sins.

The latest on Maloria and Fethrstaf? He's still gone...with no word, the cad. Also, I'm sad to
report that the previously mentioned Cymbelyne seems to be running after the tall, handsome
Ryan McKintair and breaking the heart of pudgy rodent, Marx. Another love lost...

Anyone else find it odd that the most famous "courtesan" in Rhydin is running a nursery? Just
wondering...As The Bard said, *The purest treasure mortal times afford is spotless reputation."

Mike XXVII continues his bellyaching about the finals in the ArchMage Tourney.

Best of luck to the charming children of the Arena...Morgan Crow and Lady Arane...who
announced their engagement. Of course...little has been seen of either since the announcement.
Could the path of true love be running roughly? Rumor has it Jaya Turner has returned to
Rhydin....at least that famous face and style was seen in DoS one night recently.

Ah, well....

DUEL OF FISTS

Report from the Outback.

   Lots of news to report this issue. First off welcome to a large number of newcomers to the
Outback. Welcome PsonC (Son), Spirit 1st, Heretic21, TVitolo, PlXlE Lee, JWSmithII,
Zephaniah1, YarblekMty, Narcisiss, Rainman007, Hydradas, Donovan32, ShdwKNGT,

Hawk1980, Vertigo11 and Cian Blue. Hope that all of you had fun and will join us again!
   Also wanted to thank all of our patrons, especially our regular ones. The Outback is showing
definite signs of growth and we hope that this will be a continuing trend and that the Duel of Fists
is growing in popularity!

   As everyone should know, the beginning of July marked the beginning of a new cycle. Which
means that if you had wandered in before and had lost a few matches and weren't wondering in
'cuz you didn't like being in the hole, now's your chance to change all that! The old scores have
been cleared! Wander by and give the Duel of Fists another try!
   In conjunction with the end of the cycle, the Outback has also held it's second ever Diamond
Quest Tourney! The contenders for the Diamond included: PrinceFyre, Siera Red (current DoS
Overlord), JakeThrash, Dallara, Percival & ShanniCltn.

Photo: <<Percival is caught in the middle of a Fancy Duck, by Siera Red's chop across the
forehead>>

over the heavily favored Percival! (SC)

   Going by the records posted in the standings, the most likely candidate for the new Diamond
looked to have been Percival. However, sometimes the odds don't make the win.
   Beginning at 9:30pm eastern time, Monday, the 24th of July, in the RDI Duelers Arena the fun
began as RDI Panthr held a single elimination round that resulted as follows:

*** Elimination round ***
PrinceFyre over DaIIara, 5-2 in 8
Siera Red over Percival, 5-1 in 6
ShanniCltn over JakeThrash, 5-1 in 10

Photo: <<PrinceFyre comes down with a Jab, to stop Dallara's legsweep cold>>
Caption: Stephen waits just long enough for the wily Dallara to drop, then strikes to put her
down!  (SC)

   Ordinarily the rules dictate that single eliminations will be held until there are 4 duelers who
then duel in a round robin fashion to determine the winner of the Diamond. Because of the
number of Emeralds, the rules were amended for this event to best accommodate 6 duelers.

Photo: <<JakeThrash, in the midst of a Fancy Duck as well, is caught across the temple by
ShanniCltn's whirling Spinkick>>
Caption: Round 1 was not a good one for Fancy moves, as Shannon's spinning kick impacts
before Jake can duck away! (SC)

   After a very short break as the eliminated duelers headed for the bar and the supply of ale, Panth
picked things up again by calling a series of 3 matches which pitted each of the elimination round
winners against each other. The prize going to whomever managed the most wins. The final
rounds went as follows:

*** Final Round Robin Competition ***
PrinceFyre over Siera Red, 5-4 in 11
ShanniCltn over PrinceFyre, 5-3 in 11
ShanniCltn over Siera Red, 5-1 in 8

Bout 1:
Photo: <<Siera Red lashes out with a thunderous Jab, as PrinceFyre dodges away so Fancily that
Siera is entangled in the ropes>>
Caption: Stephen shows his prowess at brilliant defense, using Siera's momentum against her to
notch a semifinal win!  (SC)

Bout 2:
Photo: <<PrinceFyre swings around into a very Fancy Legblock, just as Shanni Colton's Jab
impacts upon his temple>>
Caption: This time, defense is not enough, as Shannon demonstrates her reputation for brutality..
(SC)

   After the 3 matches were over, Panth formally brought out a large Diamond and presented it to
ShanniCltn, who needed a little help standing at that point, convinced as she was that this was all
a dream.
   It's no dream Shanni ;) Congratulations! Long Live the new Diamond Shanni Colton!

   Would also like to thank all of the Emeralds who were able to participate. There was some
excellent duelling that night and it was clear why they all deserved their rank. Thanks again for
your support and well fought!

                             ****************  AP ******************
   *** In need of relieving some stress? *** Feel like taking out your aggressions the
old-fashioned way? Or just enjoy twisting opponent into funny shapes? Well, the little town of
RhyDin has just the thing for you! It's called the Outback! And there's no holds barred! Wander
in! Find out why 9 out of 10 dentists say it's the best thing since the invention of hockey! Come
on down and give it a try!

Eschewing the Phlag Pole

   The following is the latest in an ongoing series of articles featuring various duelers and their
weapons. If you would like to see the story of your blade (broomstick, dead animal, dagger,
submachine gun, etc) appear here, please get in touch with Simini x via email...

HOGROTH
   Phlag is an enigma to many people... personable enough, but keeping much to himself. When he
responded favorably to my request for an interview, I jumped at the chance to find out more
about him and the battleaxe he wields. Besides that, I knew he lived on the top floor of the Red
Dragon Inn, where I was still living at the time. The only commute would be a flight of stairs, as
opposed to airborne, multi-dimensional or magickal travel; or any of the other weird stuff I've
done for this column!
   Anyway... Phlag's "pad", as he calls it, is a mini-reconstruction of his native village of Xyloph;
greenery everywhere, down to the green stream that runs down the middle; a dueling ring,
multi-weapon firing range, and indoor pool.

Simini xx: Alright, alright, let's get started... Okay, Phlag... tell me about Hogroth... Where
did it come from, etc...
Phlag X: Hogroth...hmmmm... Well, might as well start from the beginning... :::smiles and
then sets into the tale::: In my home village of Xyloph, there used to be terrible warfare with a
neighboring tribe. My ancestors fought for centuries with the Phenon people. There was much
bloodshed and each of our villages fell in population. Legend has it that just as Xyloph was on
the point of collapse, Xynon, the nature god worshipped by my people, provided his "God Axe"
for the village's most powerful warrior, My great grandfather. He fought valiantly in battle and
slayed many Phenon soldiers. Within days Xyloph emerged victorious and Phenon was enslaved
by the Xyloph people. The "God Axe" was placed in the chief of the village's war room and was
kept by the people just in case war was to break out again. Xylon didn't take back his weapon
and the battleaxe was passed down through the generations, until it came to me. I was given it on
my father's death bed... :::frowns::: ...and left the village. :::smiles suddenly at Simini::: And here I
am!  :)
Simini xx: That's quite a story... and Xylon's blade is Hogroth, I am assuming... Why did you
leave the village?
Phlag X: Yer absolutely right, Simini... My village was isolated, it didn't take outsiders and
was slowly killing itself by interbreeding. That was the initial reason for my leaving. But then I
returned when news came to me that my father was dying. I would have stayed, if not for his
dying wish. :::frowns again and picks at his fingernails:::
Simini  xx:    ::watches him quietly::
Phlag X: :::looks up with a small smile::: I could use a cup of tea... you?
Simini xx: ::doesn't pry, just returns his smile gently:: Sure, that sounds wonderful actually.
And so he got the tea...
Simini xx: ::easing into the next question:: So, what does Hogroth mean?
Phlag X: Hogroth, in literal translation from my native tongue, means "God Axe".
:::smiles:::
Simini xx: May I see it? ::smiles::
Phlag X: Oh, yes! I meant to bring it over with me... ...hold on. :::smiles and sets his tea
mug down:::
Simini xx: I've seen it before, but you don't get a very good view of it when it's on your
backside!
Phlag X: ::grins at Simini:: I don't know if that's an accurate history, Sim... but that's
another interview...
Phlag X: :::stands and strides over to the dueling ring and removes Hogroth from it's green,
Xylophian velvet case::: Note the onyx handle and the thick steel blades... the small green
diamonds that follow the arc of the blade add another dimension of penetration... :::wiggles the
handle::: The Kefka handle molds to the user's hand, creating an air-tight seal between weapon
and body. :::smiles::: Would you like to hold it?
Simini xx: ::smiles and nods enthusiastically:: Yes! ::reaches out tentatively::
Phlag X: :::holds out Hogroth to Simini, confident in her handling of blades, and sets it in
her hands:::
Simini xx: ::wraps her hand around the handle, her other hand wide open, carefully
supporting the flat of the blades::
Phlag X: :::smiles, a little nervously, but smiles nonetheless:::
Simini xx: ::surprised at its ease of handling, turns it over carefully. Impressed, looks up at
Phlag and smiles:: It's a lot easier to handle than it looks...
Phlag X: Oh! I almost forgot!
Simini xx: ::nearly drops the blade at his exclamations:: What?
Phlag X: :::points to the engraved script on the flat of one silver arc::: That's never been
translated... it's like our language, but seems to be a bit more advanced.
Simini xx: ::looks at the script, trying to decipher it:: Hmmm... ::shrugs:: No idea.
::giggles::
Phlag X: :::laughs::: Well...now that my last hope is exhausted...what am I to do? :::sits
down with mock depression:::
Simini xx: ::giggles:: Oh, Phlag... ::rolls her eyes, then gets more serious::
Phlag X: :::grins at Simini::: Legend has it that when Xylon returns, he's to give us the truth
of the origin of our people. That engraving has something to do with it.
Simini xx: If you really want to know, perhaps you should ask Xenograg... he is good at such
things.
Phlag X:  Xeno, huh?
Simini  xx:    ::nods::
Phlag X: :::thinks for a second::: Hmm...good idea... :::smiles:::
Simini xx: ::hands the blade back to Phlag::
Phlag X: :::chuckles::: It kinda grows on you, huh?
Simini xx: ::smiles and lowers her head to look over her questions again::
Phlag X: :::takes the battleaxe back, and smiles down at it, tracing the engraving with his
finger:::
Simini xx: ::smiles quietly:: I hope you figure it out someday. ::noting his obvious pride in his
people, and respecting that immensely::
Phlag X: :::leans the battleaxe up against his chair::: Thanks... it's a little thing, but
something to look forward to.
Simini xx: ::smiles and leans back into her chair once again::
Phlag X: :::picks up his tea mug and sips:::
Simini xx: ::glancing at the blade:: What would happen to it if you were to die?
Simini xx: ::follows his lead, and reaches down for her own mug::
Phlag X: :::grimaces::: Interesting question, Simini... :::frowns at the mention of his
death::: I suppose that someone from my village, if it still existed, would
get word and would come fetch the axe.
Simini xx: ::nods:: And who would be its rightful possessor?
Phlag X: They'd probably take the battleaxe back to the village and place it in the chief's
warroom. The present chief would hold it for Xynon's return.
Simini  xx:    ::nods solemnly::
Phlag X: :::small smile now that the question is answered:::
Simini xx: ::voice still serious:: And... if someone tried to *take* it from you?
Phlag X: :::upends the tea mug and drains the last of the tea::: Well, in combat, the only
way to take it from it's user is to sever the fighting hand... They'd then have to peel the hand back
from the handle.... but the blade will "die" if some precautions aren't taken...
Simini xx: Oh, yuck! ::blinks:: How will the blade die?
Phlag X: :::shrugs at Sim::: Let's hope no one tries to take it... "Die" may be the wrong
word for it...the battleaxe will blacken and weaken to the point where it'll fall apart. The handle
will rot and the whole thing will be rendered useless.
Simini  xx:    ::eyes widening::  Wow!
Phlag X: All this can be prevented by soaking Hogroth for 1/4 of a lunar cycle in the waters
of the Xyloff river.
Simini xx: But what if you aren't around when it is taken? Like, if it is stolen from here, for
example?
Phlag X: I, of course, import the water... :::winks::: I usually keep it with me, but in the off
chance I'm not here when it *is* they'd have Hogroth for about 3 or 4 weeks and then it would
begin it's death process. That would be the end of it. ::smiles::
Simini xx: ::nods:: I see. That's really interesting! ::smiles::
Phlag X: Obviously, Xynon wanted to keep it in the family... :::winks::
Simini xx: <m> Wow, a blade that *dies* without its owner... ::muses a moment then
continues:: Well, Phlag, it seems you've told me all there is to know about Hogroth... ::stands and
offers a slender hand:: My thanks, Phlag. ::smiling, respectful of this warlord before her::
Phlag X: :::stands and takes the hand, kissing it gently::: Come back anytime.. ;D

   I left with a smile... Phlag had opened up a bit, and I respected him more for the knowledge I
now had. He holds no titles, but he is a worthy representative of his family and homeland.

BOOTS

Hey! Tired of all those low cuts tearing your boots to ribbons? Tired of your fashion statement

each slipper, full of sharp teeth, sticks its pinkish tongue out, as the Orc-slippers seem to sneer in
mild disgust>>

On Being New...

====----====-----=====----=====-----======------===========---
     I, being a new dueler myself, asked to join the DoS Today Staff by doing an article on
"newbies." New duelers are most of the time not respected but, some of the time, have obvious
skill. It is sometimes hard for new duelers to get in the social circuit of dueling ((and roleplay)).
So.....when you see a new dueler, help him, and maybe he/she will become a great dueler.
Remember, all duelers, greats, and not so greats were at one time newbies. I did an interview with
a good dueler, also a new dueler, RandReborn. He has been dueling for about one month.

RLupton: How did you originally find DoS dueling? :::starts the interview cautiously:::
RandReborn: I walked in one day, and thought it would be neat to duel.
RLupton:  You just saw it?
RandReborn:    yes....
RLupton: no one told you 'bout it? lucky find!
RandReborn: ::smiles:: not that I can remember
RLupton: about how long have you dueled?
RandReborn:    A month
RLupton: Do you usually win or lose win your duels?
RandReborn: A lot of my dueling is off the record.....
RLupton: On the record do you usually win or lose?
RandReborn:    In the middle
RLupton: :::nods::: Do you enjoy dueling?
RandReborn:    Yes! I love it.
RLupton: :::smiles and nods::: That's good, you have many friends?
RandReborn: Yes I have a few......
RLupton:  Like?...
RandReborn: you, Ian, E core, Firetamr, a lot
RLupton: So you've made many friends in a month! good!
RandReborn: yes.....but Tamr I had before I dueled.
RLupton: oh really......met 'em in the Inn?
RandReborn: Yes. More like she met me
RLupton: Where did you live before coming to where you are now?
RandReborn: All over.. no real place.
RLupton: Back to dueling.... do you ever expect to gain rank, to become a warlord, Baron,
or even Overlord?
RandReborn: Yes.. I will be an Overlord. Some day. And it wont take long once I get myself
straight.
RLupton: A little confident are we?
RandReborn:    No!
RLupton: considering you must first reach warlord, then get peer wins.....
RandReborn:    Yes I know.
RLupton: Ok, do you ever expect to marry?
RandReborn: No not that I can see.
RLupton:  Never?
RandReborn: Maybe to some one special.
RLupton: Who are you that's reborn?
RandReborn: What do you want to know?
RLupton: You are RandReborn, who was Rand?
RandReborn:    I'm the Dragon Reborn
RLupton:  what Dragon?
RandReborn: ok......... there was this war where all the Aes Sedai. (M and F) fought to lock up
the Dark one.
RLupton:  yes......
RandReborn: Ok. ok and he tainted (the Dark one) the male half of the One Power. The war
was the War Of The Shadow. And the man who was the one who lead the Aes Sedai to victory
over the Dark one was name the Dragon and He was the one who lead the M Aes Sedai to the
Breaking.
RLupton: So you are him reborn?
RandReborn: Yes I'm him and The Dark one is getting loose and the dragon has been reborn.
RLupton: :::puts out right hand to shake::: Thank you for your time.........
RandReborn:    ok ::shakes hand:: bye

Well, this is the article on newbies. Remember, if you're experienced, help a new dueler. Give
him/her a hint once and a while.

-Lupton

         Ask Dr. Stupid!
DoS Today's Personal Advice Column

Dear Dr. Stupid,
  Exactly what are you a doctor of?
-A.M.A.

Dear Medicos,
  That depends. My degree says proctology, but I certainly don't practice it.
-Ewwww...

Dear Dr. Stupid,
  If Peter picked a peck of pickled peppers, where'd he put 'em?
-Peter's hungry brother

Dear Pete,
  Peter's peck of pickled peppers are in his purple pants, presumably.
-Dr. Stupid, selling seashells by the seashore

Dear Dr. Stupid,
  Why would anyone sell seashells at the seashore? You can just pick them up free on the beach!
-Peter's beachcoming brother

Dear Peter,
  I'm not sure... Ask Shelly, with the seashell stand by the seashore.
-Dr. Stupid

Dear Dr. Stupid,
  The Outback, Twilight island, the RDI, the Arena, and Stars' End are all on the same planet.
How come the way to the Outback is a bunch of paths, the way to Twilight island is through
teleportation wards, the entrance to the RDI is the front door, no matter where you left from, the
Arena is always down one set of stairs, even if you left from someplace with no stairs, like the
Outback, and Stars' End has a transporter pad which people enter and leave by, even though no
where else has one.
  HOW!!!
-Puzzled

Dear Puzzled,
  It's quite simple. Ever made a Klein Bottle?
  No?
  Nevermind then. The other easiest way to explain it is simply to say that RhyDIn is the center of
all the universes, so where we go when we enter or exit is not truly anywhere. Rather, it's a 5
dimensional space, where we sit while we wait for room counts to drop below 23.

Youngblood Wins the Day.

  After the second ever Diamond Quest Tourney took place on the 24 of July 1995, it took a day
or so to catch up with her, but here now, DoSToday presents an interview with the winner of the
Diamond Tourney and the Outback's second ever Diamond Ranked dueler.
   I caught with Shanni savoring a quiet moment on board Red Star Station. She looks no different
this time from the first we met, except for that fact that around her neck she wears on display a
largish Diamond. The symbol of her new rank.

DoSToday: First of Shanni, congratulations on winning the Diamond :)
ShanniCltn: ::grins:: Thank you...I don't mind telling you, it shocked me silly.
DT: :: chuckle :: That was your first reaction when you won?
SC: ::nods:: Absolutely...I did NOT expect to win this tournament.
DT: :: chuckle :: you are anticipating my questions...:) Why didn't you think that you would win?
SC:  ::chuckle:: Habit..;)
DT: Was there someone you thought more likely to win?
SC: Well, first of all, I was practically positive Percival would take it. If not [Percy] then Jake.
Of the other 5 combatants, I'd fought everyone but PrinceFyre at least once.
DT: :: nods :: So you thought it would be Percy or Jake?
SC: ::nods:: Yep. I think almost everyone expected Perci to take it.
DT: :: chuckle :: Then it must have been a shock when you beat Jake in the elimination round.
And that Percy lost in his first match as well.
SC: I don't know which was bigger, to be honest..::grin:: I'd fought Jake twice, previously...the
first time, he absolutely cleaned my clock.
DT: :: nodding and writing ::
SC: The second came to sudden death, 4-4. Jake topped me that time too. Percy was another
person I'd never been able to beat, so I reasoned that if I came up against him, he'd down me. I
knew I had beaten Dallara and Siera at least once..so I could have a chance at least. And
Stephen...I'd never fought him at all.
DT: So when it came down to you Siera and Stephen did you have any idea that you might win?
SC: ::tilts her head:: Let's say I wasn't as pessimistic as before..::grin:: Winning over Jake gave
me confidence I never knew I had in myself. I knew, at least.. that I had a chance.
DT: When Stephen beat Siera did that affect your belief that you might win?
SC: Actually no...at that point, I wasn't even thinking about winning the *tournament*. I kinda
got tunnel vision. All I was thinking about was beating *him*.
DT:  Him being?
SC:: Stephen. ::sips her water:: If I lost to him, he had the Diamond right there.
DT:  :: nods ::
SC: I *had* to beat him. Nothing else mattered.
DT: So you were just out to do your best and weren't thinking about what it would mean if you
won.
SC: That's how I came into the tournament. When I stepped in against Stephen, though, I simply
focused everything I had on him. I *had* to win..::emphasizing that:: I had to.
DT: And indeed you did. Did at that point you consider that you might win? Or were you still
wary of Siera?
SC: One thing I was proud of was that never once was I trailing *anyone* by less than 1 point.
::shaking head:: From the moment I faced off with Stephen till the last round of it all, I shut
everything out of my mind, but *what* I was doing. Like I said..tunnel vision. I knew if I dwelt
on what *might* happen, I'd lose focus. ::smile:: Ryleigh taught me how important focus is.
DT: What about after you had beaten him? And it was down to you and Siera?
SC: Y'know..at that point, I was high on the moment..::grins:: I was ready to go for it all.
DT: Based on the scores....and your comment about not having fought Stephen do you think his
match was the hardest? Or was it the hardest because you didn't know what to expect from him?
SC: Probably...although I more look at it as being "Which match was LESS hard" than another.
That was a big thing..I didn't know what to expect from him. Only what I'd seen that night.
DT: Was there a "less" hard match then?
SC:  I really can't pick one...I mean, I put 1000% into each fight...::grin::
DT: Ok...so then it was just you and Siera. Was there a moment in the match where you
thought..."It's mine all mine"? Or did it not happen until after you actually won?
SC: ::nod:: When I hit the fourth point...I kinda felt it was almost mine. But I really avoided
thinking that way...I've seen people come back from 1-4.
DT:  :: nods ::  A wise plan I think...never get complacent.
SC: Exactly..::grin:: I never let myself do that once.
DT: Care to comment on your technique thru the night? Saw some well executed Jabs and a
number of Feints.... Did you have a strategy?
SC: I really had wanted NOT to be my usual self...especially with Jake. I know how good he is at
reading patterns. I really just reacted to the moment for the most part...and stuck to what I knew
worked. I actually avoided Jabs for the most part..and I *know* that threw them off. ::grins::
And Feints..well, they're my secret weapon. I don't think most fighters use them to their
advantage... Percival and Jake excepted.
DT:  :: nodding ::
SC: But I like them...and I have a good idea of when to use 'em.
DT: What about the techniques of your opponents? Any comments on their styles?
SC:  ::thinking::
DT: Which ones were harder to counter? Or...
SC: For the most part..I think Fancies were overused. I mean, I won two of my fights against a
Fancy move.
DT:  :: nodding ::
SC: Jake and Stephen were good at neutralizing my Feints at some points. And Siera surprised
me when she used one..::grin:: I was NOT ready for that.
DT: You think she was trying to adapt to you? Or that you just hadn't seen her employ one?
SC: I really hadn't seen her use them...nor Stephen for that matter. With Siera, I knew her style..
'cause it's close to mine. Hit and hit again.
SC: That's why she got Percy, I think..she kept it simple.
DT: :: nod nod :: He tried to get to "tricky" as it were? Overanalyzed his moves? With her,
yeah..I really think that's what happened. And left himself open for a straightforward attack?
SC: ::nod:: Straightforward was the name of the game...I mean, I won two of my three with Jabs,
for example.
DT: Any more thoughts about technique? Or about particular rounds? Any round that surprised
you?
SC: One thing I liked was the use of the Spinkick to null out a Feint Hook....I'd had it used
against me, and used it myself a few times. ::grin:: It's really frustrating.
DT:  :: chuckle ::
DT: Ok...so you won. :) Then what happened? :)
SC: I just couldn't believe it...it all seemed like a daze. Plus I was exhausted..::grin:: We all were.
DT: :: chuckle :: I understand Panth then presented you with the Diamond? Is that it? :: pointing
to the necklace ::
SC: :: nods :: It was so unreal...yes..::smiles, hand going to the Diamond hanging about her
neck:: Through it all, though...I kept feeling something deep inside, even when I was losing a
point.
DT:  :: questioning look ::
SC: ::grins:: I felt invincible. I don't think I realized it, but I do now.
DT:  :: chuckle ::
SC: Dunno if I'll ever feel that way again..but it was a *great* feeling.
DT: Ok...so Panth presented you with the Diamond... Then what?
SC: ::nods:: I just kinda collapsed into Ryle and Madi...I just felt dizzy. ::grins::
DT: What did if feel like when you saw your name as the official Diamond Rank?
SC: *That* was awesome...I mean, I'm just a girl from the spaceport, you know? ::grinning::
And seeing myself as champion, it just blew me away.
DT: :: smile :: Any plans now that you ARE the Diamond?
SC: What really still blows me away..is that I only joined DoF some time in April or so. Plans?
::thinks:: Just keep on fighting...::grin:: Keep winning as long as I can.
DT: :: chuckle :: No plans to redecorate the Outback? I've seen them do that over in the DoS
Basement. Or institute uniforms for the duellers?
SC: ::chuckles:: I dunno...I suppose some things maybe..but I love the place the way it is.
DT:  :: nod nod ::
SC: ::grinning:: I'm sure I'll think of something, eventually..but I'm not a big one for change.
DT: :: nod nod :: so it's duelling as usual then...
SC: Pretty much..I mean, I don't really consider myself *better* than anyone else. I just put it all
together when I had to, you know? ::grin::
DT: Expect that being the Diamond will affect whether people will duel you?
SC: I dunno..::laughing:: Murphy already asked if he'll still be allowed to fight me now.
DT:  :: chuckling ::
SC: :: sobering:: Seriously, though, I ain't gonna duck anyone. If I lose, I lose... I did what I set
out to do, and that was prove myself.
DT: Think people will be intimidated by the Diamond and not want to duel you?
SC: I hope not...I mean, I'm no different than I was before...and what with the rules, they don't
have to worry about getting Fancied to death. I think that it'll make me more of a target, actually.
:grin:: I mean, most people think, "Hey, she's the champ..beat her and you've REALLY done
something."
DT: :: laughing :: People will want to try their skill against the "top gun" so to speak.
SC: Yeah, exactly..::grin:: And my record speaks for itself. I lose plenty. I just win *more*.
DT: :: chuckle :: Ok...any thanks or mentions you want to make of people who helped you along
the way?
SC: Oh hell..::grin:: where do I start? Ryleigh first...she brought me here to start with, and
showed me the ropes. Kept me from getting cocky..and showed me how important focus is.
DT:  Ok...anyone else?
SC: Murphy and Jake...both of them never quite encouraging me. Murphy was encouraging me
all the way to the final point. Everyone who was there that night..::grin:: I heard them, and it
really gave me a boost when I needed it.
DT:  So the crowd helped...
SC:  ::nods::
SC: ::sobering:: And one other thing. I wanted to dedicate the win, and the title, to Kalaya
Madison Traevon...my friend Madi. She was my first and only student...and as close to a sister as
I ever had.
DT:  :: nods ::
SC: ::quietly:: She died just about a day ago, right here.
DT: I think it makes a nice gesture..
SC: So this win and this..::touches the Diamond:: are for her.
DT: All right...any final thoughts about the win?
SC: The greatest night of my life. ::quiet smile::
DT: Any advice to the newcomers? Or other contenders? Parting shots?
SC: Definitely...don't give up. I'm living proof that you can do it if you really try. The only thing
I feel I need to say is that I really won't feel like a Champion, until I beat Percival. ::quietly::
That's the one thing I still have to do.
DT:  :: chuckle ::
SC: And I hope that I can help DoF grow..::grins:: It's doing that already, but maybe I can help.
With a visible champion, maybe more people will come to DoF, and make it more popular here.
DT:  :: nod nod :: I think that's a good idea
DT: Well Shanni once again Congratulations!
SC:  ::smiles:: Thank you...
DT: And thank you for allowing us to interview you once again. :)
SC: I guess I just hope I can live up to this rank. ::grins:: Oh, one other thing... ::grinning
wickedly:: I also hope that between myself in DoF, and Siera in DoS, we can make the point that
the women can do it just as well as the bad boys. ;) Or better. ::proud grin::
DT: :: laughing :: Well I suspect there aren't many who are going to disagree with you at this
point.  ;)
SC: ::winks:: They better not. ;>
   As we wrapped up, the jukebox in the bar powered up and began playing an old tune by Pat
Benatar. As it began to play and I headed for the door, Shanni grinned and pointed to the back of
her jacket where the word "Invincible" had been stitched into the leather.

 Tales from Twilight Island
This week in the Duel of Magic

   Compiled by RDI Daniel

  Readers, if you remember our piece in the late breaking news last issue, Mage MikeXXVII had
challenged ArchMage Lord Harvest to a grudge match. Mike was upset because, during the
tournament, he had not received a 'bye' in either of the preliminary rounds, though the other
duelists had, and so ended up with a tournament standing of 2:1 to Mamusia's 2:0 (Mamusia
progressed beyond the finals after beating Mike and lost to the ArchMage in the last round).
  Mike had not received an answer to his challenge, but last night in the Duel of Magic, he
confronted the Arch Magi. They proceeded to the ring of >Doom< *ominous thunderclap* in a
grand test of ability.
  Harvest picked up an early lead, using his dispel magic power in the first round against Mike's
ghostform for no points, but then first reflecting Mike's meteor shower and then slapping Mike
with a mage bolt when he was ghostformed for a lead of 2-0 in three rounds.
  However, as the audience started placing bets, Mike tossed up a reflection, bouncing Harvest's
mindwhip back for a point. 1-2 wouldn't last on the scoreboard, though, when Harvest dispelled
Mike's arctic blast for an advantage, extending his lead to 1-2.5.
  Mike then used his dispel magic power against Harvest's reflection, making it useless. However,
he then returned by mage bolting the Arch-Magi in the following round, giving a score of 2-2.5 in
favor of Harvest.
  Round 8 started slow, with Mike turning reflective as Harvest turned into a ghost for no points,
but round 9 picked up the action, as Mike's magnetic wizard blades caught Harvest's meteor
shower in mid air for an advantage and a tie score of 2.5 all after 9!
  Mike's come back continued, as he then arctic blasted the reflectively clad Harvest, for a score of
3.5-2.5. Harvest tried to return with wizard blades, but instead, he only managed to catch Mike's
meteor shower on them for an advantage.
  At 3.5-3 it was anyone's game, and Mike and Harvest went on the offensive. Harvest crushed
Mike under a ton of meteors while Mike, from within the rocks, sent out a psionic mindwhip,
making the score 4.5-4 in favor of Mike!
  In round 13, Mike sent out a mage bolt with the last of his strength, while Harvest disappeared
into the ghostly realm of death... The mage bolt spun in midair and waited and when Harvest
peeked back out he was immediately hit!
   MikeXXVII won the grudge match, at 5.5-4 in 13 rounds, giving rise to the question, what
would've happened at the last tournament if Mike had gone on, and what will happen at the next
one...

(The Duel of Magic, in the people connection room, RDI Duel of Magic, is open from 8-11 pm
