LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Oscar,

Wouldst that twere but paranoia, yet it hath come to my attention that some small, outspoken
contingent in Rhydin dost expect utter allegiance to the Overlord as though twere some divine right.
Methinks such naivete couldst benefit from a course in history or ten. Alas, twould seem these men be
want to squelch all opposition. I wouldst now affirm publicly my own and e'eryone else's right to
disagree with the Overlord, whene'er it shouldst behoove us.

Warmly,

Guest Editorial
by Procyonn the Raccoon

In the 1930s, chess master Anthony Santasiere favored a peculiar plan for the game's first two moves,
and even adopted the opening during the 1938 U.S. championship. Santasiere understood that his
scheme would be scoffed upon if he did not achieve elite status, and his king knight/queen knight
pawn combination acquired the name "Santasiere's Folly," though the opening itself was truly not
so bad.

In the Duel of Swords, commoner raccoon Procyonn faces a crusade similar to Santasiere's -- to
demonstrate that to disengage in round one is excellent strategy, despite the move's overlooked
status.

The disengage has mostly been discarded, for it scores only against an opponent's thrust. However, the
move's main objective is not to score -- it is to gather information. Swordplayers develop instincts
which remind them that it is especially safe to cut following an opponent's thrust, or to parry after a
opposing slash, but what information has the duelist in round one? He has none, and must select
blindly. Many duelists will choose to thrust, anticipating either cut. Some will parry, which guards
against one cut and the thrust. If the player chooses incorrectly, his opponent scores, and can proceed
with the lead.

Suppose a disengage in round one meets with a parry. Neither side scores, but the disengager has
earned the tiny advantage of knowing that his second-round thrust, or "right" cut, has greater
chance of success. The player who parried has no such knowledge -- the disengager has a full
complement of moves at his disposal in round two.

The move which casts doubt on the idea of a first-round disengage is a scoring cut, and many players
choose to cut in the first round. This is answered by suggesting that a first-round sidestep, or, worse,
the "wrong" parry, meets with the same result, and gives the opponent an easier choice to make in the
second round.

An aggressively-minded duelist might ridicule the entire premise of this article by propounding that
the object of the Duel of Swords is to score more points than one's opponent, and that the disengage
scores one-half point against only one move. In reply, 15 rounds is a long match, in which one only
needs to win by one point, and the first-round disengage only jockeys for round-two position. One may
also argue that the information gained by a disengage is negligible. In answer, *every* move gains the
same knowledge (i.e., the opponent's move), but the round one disengage provides maximum
flexibility in planning one's move in round two.

In conjunction with the general theme, I suggest to anyone who finds merit in this idea to throw out an
occasional thrust in round one to keep one's automatically-cutting opponents honest.

Follows is another of our newest feature interviews with the Barons. This time it is the enigmatic Halo
who falls into our interviewing office. One might argue that the Baron remains just as enigmatic after
the interview as before, and for that, I do apologize to you the reader. ~Ed.

DOSTODAY: How long have you been dueling?
HALO: I have been dueling for approximately six months. Recently troubles in my homeland
have forced me to return and I have been unable to duel very often.

DT: How long have you been in RhyDin?
H: Again about six month. Being the champion of the shee as I am I came to Rhydin to search for a
certain individual who may be the key to ending the oppression of my people.

DT: And who introduced you to dueling?
I learned of swordplay in the hills of Ireland where my people have been forced to eke out an
existence for low these many years.

DT: And you are from Ireland then?
H: Yes. I was born in Ireland, One of the remaining Shee Fairies. My people came to Ireland to
expand our knowledge of the world and found the people there primitive. We strode the land freely (so
I am told) until betrayed by one of our own; setting the Irish against us. Then at the battle of Dublin
the people of our homeland forsook (a second betrayal ) us and we were beaten and forced to flee into
the Hills. It is here I was born a and learned to use the trusted long sword of my father given to me
after his death (my brothers were killed at Dublin so even though female I received the sword). I hope
to use this very sword to free my people.

DT: What are your hopes for the future of dueling?
H: I would wish that all players be treated equally within the rules.

DT: And so what prompted you to declare yourself loyal to Siera Red?
H: I made no declaration. She declared me loyal after I did not make a choice. At this time I have no
feelings either way about the current Overlord. So I am content to with my status.

DT: And do your yourself have any plans for becoming Overlord someday?
H: At this time I have no such desire.

The Defense of the House of Redwin
(a ballad in long meter double)
by Athlstan

'Twas in the night of fading Spring,
to duel the House of Questrion came,
to test with blades that clash and ring,
the skill of Lord Siera's fame.

The people gathered round the rings
to listen to the steel that sings.
The people gathered round the rings
to listen to the steel that sings.

Valmion, tall with courtesy,
and blade of lightening in his hand;
Siera, graceful mystery,
with her sword Bane, did take her stand.

The people gathered round the rings
to listen to the steel that sings.
The people gathered round the rings
to listen to the steel that sings.

Valmion strikes - his slash is fair,
first blood to Questrion on this night.
Siera thrusts - and pierces air
Valmion having side stepped right.

The lightening played along his blade,
amid the streaks of blood arrayed.
The lightening played along his blade,
amid the streaks of blood arrayed.

Again the whirl and clash of steel
and Red has scored around cut low.
Blade arcing high, she rues to feel
a well-timed thrust impale her blow.

And through the ruffs that graceful flow
a curl of red began to show.
And through the ruffs that graceful flow
a curl of red began to show.

The fighters pass, their swords held high,
with wary side steps round the ring.
The lightening slashes from the sky
- to die on Bane's thrust countering.

The little bear came rushing in
in hope to see Siera win.
The little bear came rushing in
in hope to see Siera win.

And Bane darts low with steely hiss,
to smite Valmion in the thigh.
His low cut after forced to miss
- 'twas roundly parried passing by.

The ring-tailed one upon the ropes
rejoices in his rising hopes.
The ring-tailed one upon the ropes
rejoices in his rising hopes.

The wary fighters pass again,
with side steps tense around the ring.
The lightening slashes - but in vain
for Red's high cut does win the thing.

The people gathered round the rings
in homage to the steel that sings.
The people gathered round the rings
in homage to the steel that sings.

Valmion bows, still gracious fair,
in honor to Siera's sword.
Courteous he beyond compare,
as she remains the Overlord.

In truth, the victor of this night
- the art of swordplay, as is right.
In truth, the victor of this night
- the art of swordplay, as is right.

PLAIN AND FANCIES
    by Hedda Hat
*****************************************************
I'll make thee glorious by my pen,
And famous by my sword
      James Graham, 1612-1650
*****************************************************
Scylla and Charybdis, Romulus and Remus, Boris and Natasha.....couples of fame. And make no
mistake, it's coupling that makes the magic in Rhydin. We have Amaltea and Xenograg, on the happy
side, celebrating their year-plus of marriage by renewing their vows.  And a lovely ceremony it was;
too bad such a select few of us were invited. Many would have enjoyed this elegant time. And the
Brother who performed the ceremony....what a fascinating individual.

Then, there's the couple on the sad side - the beauteous and beloved Aliyanna and that handsome rake
RaynDF. Their storybook romance of redemption ended in a curiously calm divorce proceeding. The
divorce, of course, was preceded by acrimony surprising in two seemingly mature adults. But then,
Rhydin *does* elicit our best and worst, n'est-ce pas? And now a second child is born...to a broken
home. It's a sorry thing. But recovery rates are astounding in Rhydin - perhaps Ali and Tragger will
create their own storybook? And what of Najiba who has set her sights on Rayn?

In the middle of the seesaw of "Til death do us part - or maybe not"...is that high-wire act of Maloria
and Fethrstaf. Will his return to his wife and Rhydin after a long unexplained absence (unexplained
even to her!) be followed by those fatal irreconcilable differences? Truly, I hope not.

Ach...and is everyone else tired of this endless wrangling about who can challenge the Overlord and
who can intercede in her behalf, etc. etc. etc.? I am. And the bounds of honor have surely been
strained by ECore yet again. (Some might say I have a vendetta against the man. Honestly, I do not.
He just makes it impossible for me NOT to write of him...his behavior is execrable.) He attacked
Siera after his pathetic loss to Karnafexx and questioned her honor and position of respect in DoS. He
continued this absurd behavior, challenging MichaelJns and spitting upon him for no reason other than
that Jones supported the Overlord's position. Of course, those two have a long history...dating from
when Jones cut off Elijah's head and Elijah refused to die. A night or two before his ignominious loss
to Billy Ray, ECore publicly insulted his chapel mate Simini in a most foul and dishonorable manner.
Interestingly enough, he never commits these egregious acts when Bishop is present. So, of course,
Bishop never sees what the rest of us endure. Then these outrageous acts are followed by public and
private apologies. See a pattern? And I've chosen NOT to mention what he has done to my beloved
Oscar. Ah well....it takes all kinds, as they say.

We must bid a sad adieu to RDI Max and RDI Keeper, who must bow to the exigencies of the AOL
universe and cease their RDI-ing. We shall miss their professionalism and excellence as callers.

Another bright spot in Rhydin these days is Merentha....the charming and courteous dueling lady.
Look for her...she's worth the search.

Congratulations to LrdHrvst, who successfully retained the ArchMage position in Duel of Magic.
While I was unable to attend, I understand it was another exciting and challenging evening of magical
entertainment. Mamusia - congratulations on making it to the finals! Does anyone think Mike XXVII
will EVER be able to beat Mam?

Bye all....see you around.

Report from the Outback

The past few weekends have been generally good over in the Outback. Overall attendance has
increased which is certainly something that we are happy to see. We think that part of that is due to
the Outback being open in Fridays now.
As always we want to invite any and all to come and participate. Both new-comer and old-timer are
welcome!

We had a large number of new-comers wander through in the last few weekends and of course we'd
like to offer a quick welcome to them all and a thank you for their patronage: Wildantor, JennaBane,
AragornKoG, PYouker, Merilsa, KalayaM, Mcbain99, Quethleg, Pippin9559, NatashaBad,
IaMhErE696, Doriyan, BenGrifter, KHAOS KRIS, Laash, BujinNeko, the notorious Karnafexx,
PearlsNoir, Maui PDq, Goldglo, JimmyThHnd, IAMBUS and Dean Shadw.
These past weekends also saw the return of some of the Outback's long missing old-timers to
include: Dare Ltan1, Prince Fyre, and Siera Red. It was fun to watch the old-timers meet the
new-comers and it certainly led to some of the most interesting duels of the past few weekends as
new-comer bashed old-timer and old-timer slammed new-comer. At this point, one would be
hard-pressed to choose anyone as the favorite to win the Diamond next.
On a more comical note, amongst our rash of new-comers, it was a distinct pleasure to see the likes
McBain99 wander in with his lawyers to add a rather unusual twist to the duelling. It's not everyday
when you see lawyers jump into the ring and cry "Copyright Infringement" in the middle of a duel.
Finally, the Outback's second Diamond Quest is just around the corner now. If there are any who
ever wanted to wander in and see what it's all about, this tournament would be an excellent time to do
so, as it's going to be the best against the best in a free-for-all for the Diamond. For more information
please keep an eye on the official DoF folder, but a tentative date has been set for 16 June for the
Great Brawl to take place!

                             **************** AP ******************
*** In need of relieving some stress? *** Feel like taking out your aggressions the
old-fashioned way? Or just enjoy twisting opponent into funny shapes? Well, the little town of
RhyDin has just the thing for you! It's called the Outback! And there's no holds barred! Wander
in! Find out why 9 out of 10 dentists say it's the best thing since the invention of hockey! Come
on down and give it a try!
And for those who just like watching grown men and women pound each other senseless,
there's plenty of ale for the enjoying, courtesy of the famed Red Dragon Inn.

          --Ask Dr. Stupid--
DoS Today's advice column to the stars

Dear Dr. Stupid,
Why is it that when the ref says '*Macro Duck*' so that he/she can send a macro to someone who
asked a question, everybody in the room has to immediately ::duck::, thereby scrolling the first half of
the macro off the screen before the second half appears? Don't they realize that the macro goes quicker
if they DON'T hit return, but instead wait until the macro ends before sending what ever message
they've just typed?
- RDI- Um, I mean, just a concerned citizen. Yeah.

Dear Citizen,
I have no idea, whatsoever. I know that the followers of DoS Today would be much too sensible to
do such a shameful thing. After all, if someone enters a room confused as to what is going on, being
greeted by a round of ::ducks:: is not exactly conducive to learning... I think, therefore, each ref
should have their 'macro duck' message read something like the following:
"*Macro Duck* (In otherwords, please hold off typing for a second - including ::ducks:: Thanks. :) )"
-Duck Stupid

Dear Dr. Stupid,
If there's a Duel of Fists, for hand to hand combat, and a Duel of Swords, for blade to blade combat,
and a Duel of Magic for, uh, glowing balls of lightning to glowing balls of lightning combat, then what
dueling game is there for us?
-Couch Potato

Dear Spud,
A new game was actually proposed not too long ago, which would be a Duel of Audiences, where in
the players would sit, drink and eat chips, and watch other duels. As they go up in ranks, they'd get
different flavors of Doritos(tm).
However, it was quickly resolved that the Duel of Audiences would be D.O.A.

Dear Ha, ha.

duelers and their weapons. If you would like to see the story of your sword (broomstick, dead animal,
dagger, submachine gun, etc) appear here, please get in touch with Simini x via email...

RING OF FYRE
We last visited the mad sweep, Falire... I thought it most appropriate to continue with Falire's
"hermano" (that's "brother", to those of you that don't remember your high school Spanish); the
esteemed former Overlord Prince Stefano de Fortenza.

Prince Stefano de Fortenza appeared on the DoSToday doorstep sporting a casual smile and an
unusually resplendent wardrobe consisting of dark leather britches, a silken shirt, a sturdy pair of
boots, and of course, that characteristic cape. Though shy of a full six feet, his body is nevertheless
well-built, while his face, with those striking green eyes beneath a tidy mass of thick brown hair, is no
less alluring; only the lack of perceptible discomfort despite the chilliness of the early morning belies
this perfectly human appearance.
"Shall we?." he asks, and we were off. Prince Fortenza led me briskly towards the forests of the
northwest. Eventually, we came to a point where ancient trees dominated the horizon.
Upon reaching the periphery of civilization, Fortenza deviated from his course and cut through the
forest, all the while demonstrating his familiarity with the terrain by indicating quirks of the landscape
as they emerged.
Finally, we reached a small clearing that had been razed by fire; the charred remnants of perhaps a
dozen distinct species of tree surrounded us. Even so, one could see the vibrant colors of new grasses
and flowers that were reestablishing themselves in the area.
Stephen smiles. "This is the place where I reentered the world... I doth fear I wast not so proficient at
restraining my flames then. Twas my first experience on an earthly realm in my modified form."
"So you were on earth before and not as an elemental?"
"Aye." he replies. "In truth, I be a native of this land, m'lady. As other men, I wast born of human
parents. I didst become a prince by adoption. Twas the goodly mage Lorcano that didst imbue my
body with its fiery essence - a process that didst not tickle, forsooth."
"Is this place a secret?" I ask, curious.
He laughs a warm laughter. "Nay, nay, nay. Nay, or methinks I wouldst ne'er have brought thee
hither, m'lady. Forsooth, none that hath seen it needs must fear reprisal from me."
"Good," I smile, wanting to get to the point. "Now let's see that sword."
Fortenza complied quickly, producing a slender, glittering hilt from his pocket which he twirled in
his hand for an instant before allowing it to settle in his grip. Abruptly, a long blade of fiery steel
sprung forth from the hilt which he slowly conveyed in my direction, the radiant heat providing a
welcome respite from the cold. I ran my finger along the etched surface of the sparkling hilt.
   "Gold?"
"So I be told, though methinks I wouldst not know gold from ormolu."
As my eyes ventured along the length of the sword, he spoke the words I seem to hear all too often
while doing these interviews... "I needs must advise against touching the blade, m'lady."
So I just looked. It is comparable to the blade of a typical long sword in size and shape, though it
was tinted a deep red hue. Small, thorn-like protrusions of flame dotted its keen edge.
"Are there magical properties, Stephen?" I ask, excited at the prospect of seeing some magic.
Unfortunately, even Stephen did not know. "I doth fear I be ignorant of the mechanics of its
operation, m'lady. Tis rumored the blade tis a manifestation of the essence of its wielder. I wouldst
posit that with practice any fire elemental couldst wield it."
"So how did you get it?
"Twas a bequest given me by my adoptive parents, m'lady. Aye, a parting gift bequeathed unto me
for numerous reasons."
My brow arched, curious, encouraging him to go on.
With a small enigmatic smile, Stephen declines the subtle question. "It doth suffice to say tis a matter
of my Fate, m'lady. Pray pardon me for I wouldst omit the details as I doth not wish to reveal them
publicly."
Moving along quickly, I asked him how the blade felt in his hands, since I was unable to touch it
myself.
"Well, tis a simple task to wield the sword with the blade either fully retracted or fully extended," he
replied. "To maintain some intermediate length doth require a measure of effort that wouldst preclude
dueling concurrently. Howe'er, as this be merely an interview... "
With that Fortenza held the sword rigidly before him, allowing it to retract a small amount. After
several moments of vacillation, the blade eventually settled down to a roughly constant length. But the
blade was not simply a scaled-down version of the original; its color was variegated, the cusp was
immature, and small, fiery waves traveled from hilt to tip. Clearly, the sword was unusable in this
condition.
"Wow! That's really weird!" I said. "Very interesting. One last question, Stephen," I said, looking
around.
   "Aye?"
   "Which way to Rhydin?"
He laughs. "Come, m'lady, I shalt bring thee thither." I carefully placed my around through his and
we returned to town.

Tales From Twilight Island
  --The Duel of Magic--

This week was an exciting one for the Duel of Magic. Not only did the third cycle come crashing to a
halt, the ArchMage Tournament was held.
The Mages participating were ConnorMcld, Daegarth, DoofusGoof, Mamusia, and MikeXXVII.
In the quarterfinals, DoofusGoof received a 'bye', and Connor and Mike were in ring 1, and Daegarth
and Mamusia were in ring 2.
Mike and Mamusia would both turn out to be victorius, and the semifinals opened with Mike v.
Doofus, as Mamusia received a 'bye'. Mike won in 13 rounds after a close and grueling battle by
Doofus.
The finals had Mamusia vs. Mike. In a short 12 rounds, she finished him off with a score of 5-2. This
paved the way for her to enter the ArchMage battle against the incumbent, Lord Hrvst. He duplicated
her feat in the finals, finishing her in a mere 9 rounds with a score of 5-2, and was recrowned as the
Arch Mage! Congratulations, Lord Harvest!

Siera Red... fist fighter

Welcome back to our series "So ya' wanna be a Fist-fighter." I have with me today not only one of the
Outback's most well known personalities, but also one of the most well known duelers in the Duel of
Swords. Her fame as a duelist has made her name a legend amongst the halls of RhyDin. In meeting
her, I almost expected her to be nine feet tall and to be wielding a blade of fire. As it was, even though
she wasn't really a giant (standing only 5'10 she was only an inch or two taller than I) and her blade
didn't really seem ready to set the room afire (I couldn't see the blade itself, but its hilt and sheath were
plain, almost painfully so. Although I DID note with a certain apprehension that it was also
well-worn!), I was most impressed by the aura of the person who settled into the chair opposite me.
She was young, which surprised me. Perhaps in her twenties, and certainly very fit, although I did
note lines around her eyes uncommon for one so young. It seemed that perhaps she had already seen a
full lifetime. It was easy to believe that here was one who had a warrior's soul. Settling into her chair,
almost mannishly, she reminded me a lot of certain other duelers I've interviewed. Her attire was that
of a soldier's, a shirt, metal studded chausses, simple belt, and no hint of decoration anywhere. When
her eyes did finally settle on me, I had the distinct impression that she was critiquing me. It was a
rather unnerving feeling since I was here to interview her.

DosToday: Good morning, um Ms. Redwin? Siera? If I might ask, what would you prefer I call
you? :: naturally I was somewhat nervous about her reputation amongst the staff's cub-reporters and
was anxious not to offend her. I'd already been warned not to call her Lady Redwin ::
Siera Red: Well now, my name is Siera. I suppose that would suit, aye? ::slightly amused look before
glancing about:: Ah... I don't suppose there's an ale to be had about here?
DT: :: hurriedly has the bartender set up an ale for her ::
DT: Well, why don't we start with what brought you to the Outback. How did you happen to wander
in and get started in the Duel of Fists?
SR: Aye then. ::nodding, taking a long sip of the ale before continuing, and then holding the mug atop
her knee:: 'Twas a new sport only some while back and Panther was seeking an exhibition duel. And
so I fought the exhibition.
DT: Oh really? Wow, so you've been around since the very beginning! Can you remember who you
fought?
SR: Jade One? You know, the rogue?
DT: Did you win?
SR: :: shrugs and offers a short nod as if to downplay her answer :: Aye.
DT: You've been around the Outback for sometime, any thoughts you'd care to share with our readers
about the changes in the duelers or in the rules?
SR: There are a good number more of fine duelers. Gads, but I hardly dare set my foot within a ring
there without a strong drink at the ready... ::chuckle::
DT: :: chuckles as well ::
DT: Do you think the rules changes will affect your chances at taking the Diamond?
SR: ::wry smile, setting the ale atop the table:: Are you so sure I have a chance to begin with?
::chuckles before growing more serious:: I don't rightly know, to tell the truth. I suppose I can only do
my utmost and then see, aye?
DT: Have there been any fights that were particularly memorable for you?
SR: Fighting JakeThrash was particularly memorable, what for the pain. One needs must avoid the
tusks, do you see? Fighting Ian is memorable enough--rot, but he's a tall lout. ::sighing:: I daresay the
more bruises one takes, the more memorable the match is likely to be--at least for the first few weeks,
hmm.
DT: Is there anyone in particular that you'd like to fight?
SR: ::contemplating for a moment before lifting a shoulder:: I'd be honored to fight anyone that would
have me. In truth, there is not a certain one I can think of.
DT: Well then let's talk about dueling. Do you have a style or technique that you were trained in? Or
use when dueling?
SR: I've not had any training in this sort of fighting other than that which I found in the taverns and
the inns, though I daresay 'twas training enough at the time. Style or technique? Nay... I try to watch
my opponents, for their eyes and weight shifts tell a great deal. Other than that, I try not to get punched
in the face by Jake, the great lug... ::muttering a thing or two about their last duel::
DT:  :: chuckling ::
DT: You're aware of the upcoming Diamond Quest. Do you know all of the other challengers who
will be competing for the Diamond?
Siera Red: ::blank look::
DT: :: unable to read the look and continuing :: Any of them that you are wary of?
SR: All of them, I would think. Gads... ::reaching for the ale::
DT: What do you think are your chances for taking the Diamond?
SR: Well now, how many are in the quest? ::tilting her head with an ironic smile:: How many is one
of that?
DT:  :: chuckle ::
DT: If you did win that would certainly have to be some sort of record. Having taken the Diamond
and Overlordship.
SR: ::brows lifting:: Rot, I had not thought of't. Aye, I suppose it might be, though I'd not think to be
the one to do't. ::frowning some:: The Overlordship is sometimes burden enough.
DT: As we wrap up, any hints for new-comers to the Outback? Or words that you'd like to pass on to
your fellow Emeralds about he upcoming tourney?
SR: Well, it seems to me that fellow emeralds have no need of advice from me. ::smile:: As for
newcomers, I'd say that there is a great deal to be learned from watching. As for those to watch, there
are the emeralds... Percival is a fine fighter to watch, as are Dallara and Shanni... there is quite a list
there.
DT: Well, thank you very much for your time Siera. I wish you luck in acquiring the Diamond.
SR: My thanks. ::nodding some, draining the ale::

That's it for this week. Be sure to wander by Siera's folder "For Honor Born" which can be found
under Dragon Tales. Join us next time as we endeavor to interview another of the Outback's
prospective Diamonds and find out a bit more about the up-coming Diamond Quest tournament!

LATE-BREAKING NEWS....

MikeXXVII, mage in the Duel of Magic, and participant in the ArchMage Tourney has challenged
Arch Mage Lord Hrvst to a duel! Mike, through lack of luck with the dice, did not receive a 'bye' for
either the quarterfinals or semifinals, and won both. This makes his record during the Arch Mage
Tournament 2-1, as he was defeated by Mamusia in the finals. However, her record was only 2-0, as
she received a 'bye' for the semifinals. As of this time, Harvest has not replied to Mike about the
challenge.
