I thought of saying thank you and of congratulating you and your staff for a job well done. Sincerely Amaltea thu-Darelir ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editor, Well, regarding the facts.... It's not my habit to speak bluntly, especially in personal matters, so forgive me if I seem a bit indirect... I challenged Siera for the Overlord, not out of disrespect for her, but rather because I felt that was the best way to win her admiration... I had, and still do not have, any particular affinity for titles and ranks; however, do not take this to mean that I took the bout casually. Indeed, my personal motives made the challenge to be of the utmost import.. Moreover, after I won the title, I had planned to immediately resign the position, as I had achieved all that I cared about. Indeed, that did not happen, as Gloin asked me to stay on simply because there were too few Barons, and, moreover, I was challenged almost immediately upon gaining the title, and a resignation after a challenge would have been an unseemly behaviour.. I am not sorry that I was the one to bring an end to Siera's reign, for it is beyond doubt that she did not give up the title casually, and I hoped to prove that I was a worthy duelist. As matters stand, I will try and be an honorable and admirable Baron, until such time as one comes to take the ring from me, when I will relinquish it without rancor. It is possible I will try and take the Overlord again, should I feel that it would again prove something other than mere need for lofty titles and ranks, but I do not foresee that day coming soon. -Percival * * * page 3 ********** RED OAKS STABLE *********** Full-service stable offering boarding, training, riding lessons Breeding farm with two stallions on-site and access to two others, reasonable stud fees. The sport I've always loved is barely about dueling anymore fraught as it is with backdoor politics. Just look at how the Innkeeper flaunts the rightful ring of the poor cleric Athlstan, waving it around like her personal plaything. It is shameful. What seems worse no one is willing to step in for the little guy and call the woman on this display. This is what our beloved sport has fallen to. This and letters from lawyers between duelists, bad enough for Falon, but for others to do it... oh dear. I'm getting to be an old man, readers, and have little tolerance for these kinds of games. It has therefore become abundantly obvious that it is time for old Oscar to retire. I've spoken to Hedda, and she's agreed to look for a replacement editor so that the magazine may continue. This will be good news for DoF and DoM fans as a new writer has signed on to the magazine for DoM Reports, Arrendek. I hope that you all will welcome his input. In the meantime, that's all folks. Happy Dueling. ~Oscar. * * * page 5 SEE IT ALL Looking for a great spot to vacation, but don't want to spend 14 days looking at the same thing? Come to the Kingdom of New Caithness! In fact the first official rules were set by RDI Klytus in very late November of '94. That means we've been zappin' each other over here on the island for 10 months. The revised rules came in very early May, and seemed to improve on the game. Alas, our head count here at Twilight Island barely reaches over 10 during the dueling nights, and most of the time, many are just people cruisin' the rooms to bother nice folk like us (most of us anyway). The most apprentices, sorcerers, and the like I've seen in one room was during the Archmage tourney, about 20 of them. You can always count on one of the ten, or so, of us at duelin' nights being our new Archmage, good old MikeXXVII. Although Mike has been at every dueling night since I can remember, he seems to have trouble getting someone to willingly duel him. Until someone like Sir Jaumin comes along. Jaumin repeatedly begged Mike for a duel, I understand he went under mental treatment after that incident. Jaumin was currently an apprentice, and Mike is the almighty Archmage. Oh well, Mike beat Jaumin anyway. Maybe we can interview Mike in our next column (if there is one). I think it is time for many sliced up or bruised duelers from other arenas to come and try the Duel of Magic. I was once a swordsman in the Duel of Swords, and battled ShanniCltn in the Duel of Fists, but the Duel of Magic seems, from this reporter's perspective, to be the best. If you want a few quick wins in the Duel of Magic, now is the time! With many a roomcruiser willing to learn, teach them. You pick up a win and they get to decide if they like the DoM and if so, can get some strategy. Sure, it may seem petty, but why not? <<Advertisement>> It's fun! It's exciting! It'll make your hair singe and your brain tingle! Yes, folks! This is the time to learn the arts of magic! It's easy to start, with only 6 moves to choose from, but, with experience, the moves expand quickly! If you think it's fun to be struck with a ton of rock while giving your opponent a headache, or watch your blades of magical energy go through someone's magical shield, then the Duel of Magic is for YOU! Conveniently located within teleport range on twilight island. * * * page 7 Tired of climbing up your chimney and emerging covered in soot? Perhaps I should go from the serious to the silly? At the always-exciting Red Star Station, Axtage escaped the law once again. With the inadvertent aid of Adam Twizt, he vanished to parts unknown. Twizt, in the process of being arrested, was rescued by Tarillia, who later denied all involvement despite the presence of eyewitnesses and a security video. Not sure what will be happening with this story as it develops, but keep alert when visiting RSS. Down here in Rhydin, word is that Feadur has left the realms ... and Siera. Some say Najiba was part of his disaffection although she claims only to know the dark elf in his official capacity. Where is the truth in this? Who knows....but Siera will not talk of it, other than to say Feadur has returned to explain his failure to retain his title to the matron of his clan. And if you believe that's the whole story, I have an inn to sell you.... Some say Phlag and Larana may be rekindling the old flame...anyone seen sparks? Speaking of on-again, off-again....the latest is that Morgan Crow, who left Arane for LilayBeth - has now left the beauteous and loyal Beth for Jenna. Morgan insists that he is not a, as he put it, a "womanizer." Ask Beth what she thinks about that...not to mention that Morgan told this reporter he was no longer in love with Beth *before* he told Beth. 'Tis not a pretty picture. Of course, all things considered....rumor says that Morgan is still carrying a torch for someone in Duel of Magic who loves another and all these other women are his search for someone to match the lady of DoM. If any of you missed the charity auction in Red Star, I urge you to attend the next one. A delightful and revelatory evening it was - and financially successful too with the orphans of Rhydin being the beneficiaries. The wonderful Rissa V was emcee and herself was the subject of much bidding. This lovely lady will be sorely missed when she departs Rhydin and environs. Bonne chance, Rissa, dearie! Recent denizens of Star's End report that Najiba and Marx are getting married. However, I can get no confirmation from either individual. Keep your eyes open, dear readers. Oh. I almost forgot....the omnipresent IanR is rather insistent that I tell the world that he and sweet Alyx are "fine" now that they have reconciled. Oh, did I already offer you that Inn? And speaking of the always honorable Ian...rumor has it he punched Ree Skylr. Anyone know how dear Rayn reacted? Or does anyone care.... And did all notice Kairee wearing an unearned Baron's ring in DoS the other night? And utilizing her wiles to ensnare the estimable and chaste Athlstan? There's a story there, all....and Dirk Random is at the bottom of it. Several sources have commented on the terrifying murder of Lylith by Ackursed1. I am happy to say I missed the event and hope that somehow right will prevail and this horrifying creature be brought to justice. Well...that's all for now....see you in the arenas, dears! ((On a very serious note, I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of the player known as Jaxon T'nas Merlin, aka TnasJax and LtCdSetie, who died in an accident on September 5th. From all reports he was a superb human being and role-player and will be missed in real life as well as in cyberspace. The world has too few such individuals and the loss of one makes us all poorer. As Donne said, "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." (RDI Jake has moved to Fridays.) Everyone is encouraged to wander by and visit the Outback to welcome Percy, and make him call a duel or two! He gets kinda grouchy if people don't wander in to duel. ;) Congratulations to a number of people for advancing in rank including Merilsa to Jade, Haplo35 who made Ruby, and to MorganCrow who made Sapphire. Also, a very special congratulations to AragornKoG and to Ian R MacK who made Emerald! Ian actually went up two ranks since our last report. Ian gets Jake's Brute of the month award, actually Ian gets Jake's Brute-Hunk of the month award, cuz ShanniCltn gets the Brute-Babe of the month award! Ian was a man on a mission this last month as he gladly challenged anyone and everyone, and then promptly pounded most of them to earn his Emerald. He didn't just cruise through that month though, ShanniCltn, perhaps in training for the next Diamond Quest Tourney, has been a woman obsessed in her duelling as well! Shanni and Ian had certainly one of the most memorable matches on record for the Outback as they took a match to 8-7 before Shanni finally won! Talk about fighting for a victory! The spectators winced from the intensity of their match. New-comer to watch! If ya' happen to wander in over the next few weeks, watch for Sajalyones! Jake predicts she's going to be hopping up the ranks pretty quick. Why does Jake think that? Saja in practice spars managed to beat up Jake, Ian and even ShanniCltn! On the lighter side, RDI Percy has decided that normal duelling just isn't enough, and has constructed a ring of jello! It was a sight to see as duellers climbed dubiously or enthusiastically into the dread ring of jello to see just how much fun jello can be! This orc in particular loved his duel with Kyttn in the jello. It's almost that time! The Outback is fast approaching the end of a cycle which means that there is a Diamond Quest Tourney just around the corner! Ian and Aragorn will be joining the other Emeralds this go around, and if there any of you out there that had a desire to try for it, ya' got just a precious couple of weekends to hurry up and do some serious duelling to join them! Will Shanni be able to hold her title? Can she retain the Diamond? Will all of the other Emeralds get the word RAID planted on their foreheads? Or is there perhaps some new up and comer who will take it? Ian perhaps? Perhaps an old-timer! PrinceFyre is certainly a possibility, and as much as the orc enjoys taunting Perky, he has to admit that Percival has a pretty good shot too! For that matter, all the Emeralds are skilled duellers and stand a chance to take the Diamond! To all of them good luck and good duelling! One final bit of news, rumor has it that the Duel of Fists and the Duel of Magic might be moving! Discussions are taking place that will hopefully move the duels back into the FFGF area, and into Red Dragon Hall. What does this mean? It means that we won't have to fight with room-surfers for control of the rooms and hopefully it will also mean that the callers will be able to call more duels! So if ya' been staying away, cuz ya' just don't like being out in the public chat-rooms, ya' might want to keep your eyes out and when we do move, if we do, we hope that you will join us! Wander in! We want to prove that moving to the FFGF area is a good move for DoF and DoM, and the best way to show that is to call more duels! To do that we need your patronage! :) **************** AP ******************* *** In need of relieving some stress? *** Feel like taking out your aggressions the old-fashioned way? Coming out of the tourney with three WoL was the beautiful Yigraine. She dazzled us with all of her repertoire of well-timed moves. When she left, she also wore on her person a brooch, given her by RDI Connor himself, signifying her new lower advocate title. Runners up were as follows: Arrendek with 1 WoL, Ian R Mack with 1 WoL also, and Sueseas with 2 WoL. The awards were: 2 3rd place 1 WoL's, 1 2nd place 2 WoL's, and 1 first place 3 WoL's and the lower advocateship. The last round battle between Yigraine and Sueseas was a terrific, suspenseful, 15 round match. Here is a summary: | Spells | | Round | Yigraine | Sueseas | |~~~~~'|~~~~~~~~~~~~''|~~~~~~~~~~~~~| | 1 | Arctic Blast | Artic Blast | | 2 | Wizard Blades | Reflection | | 3 | Mage Bolt | Wizard Blades | | 4 | Meteor Shower | Mage Bolt | | 5 | Displacement | Mind Whip | | 6 | Artic Blast | Mage Bolt | | 7 | Wizard Blades | Displacement | | 8 | Artic Blast | Mage Bolt | | 9 | Meteor Shower | Wizard Blades | | 10 | Wizard Blades | Artic Blast | | 11 | Displacement | Reflection | | 12 | Mage Bolt | Mind Whip | | 13 | Artic Blast | Artic Blast | | 14 | Displacement | Displacement | | 15 | Artic Blast | Shield | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was a very exciting match! In the 10th round it became anyone's game after Sueseas came back and made it a 3 to 3 tie. What an honor for this reporter to have the opportunity to duel the new lower advocate in her road to the top. Missing from the tourney were: Matt312 and Derivon. Good job for all of the other duelers that were there, but for one winner to emerge there must be losers. When last we met, Percival was overlord, any one remember him? Poor Percy, he was beset by challenges right and left first of which was from Feadur. There were some baron intercessions in there, but in the end Feadur got the title. Next came DevonGoral exercising his right to challenge from his Baron Tournament win, and the challenge took place in the middle of the day one day. No hint no warning. Then there was... Well get the picture? Gloin mentioned recently that there have been so many challenges that attendance has dropped significantly. It was just this concern that led him to the laudable effort of putting off the Gnimish vs Ian MacKenzie duel. That challenge was entwined in a Baron challenge/intercession in which Karnafexx dueled Kalamere for his Baron seat and to stop MacKenzie from getting a free shot at the Overlord Gnimish. Karnafexx lost the duel and therefore Kalamere kept his ring, and Ian moved on to fight Gnimish who proved to him quite handily that his dueling skills were "worthy" of his title. What a match. It is quite clear however if any interest is to remain in the Overlord challenges and Baron challenges that they need be separated by at least 2 weeks each. Once upon a time it was "Courtesy" to allow the Overlord 2 weeks to get into the role. These days the Overlord is allowed one minute if they are lucky. As soon as the standings are posted, the Overlord is showered in more challenges. If the rank be special at all, then there should be a waiting period in my mind at least. The dueling community also lost the last original Baron, Halo to a duel with LordovDale. The Barons as they stand now: Athlstan (no ring), Feadur, IanRMack, JSVRamirez, Kalamere, LordovDale, Percival, PhantomDOS, Redzealot Overlord: GnimishRW * * * page 23 ~ Larana's Love Loft ~ Looking for a romantic present for your spouse, harem, slave or lover?
